View Full Version : Have you calibrated your monitor?

I'm curious as to how many out there have calibrated their monitors. I've gotten by so far with software-only (e.g. Adobe Gamma) calibration but I finally gave in and decided to purchase a hardware calibrator, a GretagMacbeth EyeOne Display 2 to be specific.

I did it with Adobe Gamma for quite a while and finally broke down and got the Spyder 2. The difference before / after was night and day and made me glad I spent the $200. The thing I noticed is I keep my best results if I re-calibrate it every 15 days or so. My CRT is about 3 years old so maybe I'm seeing more drift than you would in a newer monitor.

Is it possible to calibrate Laptop monitors with Adobe Gamma? I've tried it, but nothing seems to change.

I don't use the puck(colormeter). I use the Gretag Macbeth Spectrocolormeter. Just to clarify.

Nope, just use the stock profile from the mfr. Works fine for me. Colors right on.

Not according to Adobe's forums. When I installed PSE3 over PSE2, I read a lot of posts about losing Gamma during the upgrade so I went to all the trouble to deinstall and reinstall in a particular way only to find out that it doesn't work for LCD's only CRT's. There are some software products out there, Liquid Color is one, that will work for LCD, but I haven't tried them. Too many other things to learn before I tackle this subject again.

Spyder 2 Pro.....
This is a MUST if you want to have any kind of control of the printing process. I've gone so far as to make custom profiles for my printer and the different papers I use. No more pulling out my hair (but it's still turning gray), and life is much easier

Ok, I'll be the first to fess up. No, I haven't calibrated my LCD (though I did adjust the monitor so whites are white, blacks are black, and the color tempture is right). I do very little printing, mostly web work and viewing on the computer, so I use sRBG for everything. Yes, I tried Adobe Gamma and that turned out to be a mess printing-wise. I gave up, went back to sRBG, and my printing problems went away. It may be K.I.S.S. approach, but it works for me.

Spyder with OptiCAL (the same as Scott above).
Before I got the Spyder, I tried it with Adobe Gamma, but I couldn't get it right. With the Spyder it was easy. Worked well on my old Sony Multiscan E400 CRT and also works well on my new Dell 2405FPW LCD.

Finally got my EyeOne Display 2, so now I can vote in my own poll! Boy, the color temperature of my monitor was way off before calibration. Things look much better now.

Any complaints on the Spider 2 Pro? Do you need to buy more then the packeage to fully utilize the Cal tool? Looking to buy one soon.

Profile Mechanic from Digital Light & Color.
We need to convert all the naysayers that voted 'no' in the poll. What a difference a calibrated montior makes.

My shoulders are sagging. I'm getting pretty good with the camera, taking positive baby steps with PE3, then comes the whole color managment issue. I started looking in to Costco online photo thing, but now it appears that the nice LCD monitor I just had to have last year is not suitable for calibrating----or is it?
My images look pretty good to me, and display that way on my other computers (which are also LCD, however). I do have a couple of old CRT's, but I don't think my comp will support two monitors.
How important is it to go to a CRT display, and is the LCD a waste of time?
I don't really want to print at home, but would sure like to get the nicer images printed elsewhere.
