is it a greater scaup
Agreed. Its normally very difficult to tell b/t the greater and lesser scaup but in this case with the round head and slight greenish tint I think its a fairly safe bet that its a greater.

is it a greater scaup
I believe it is but they are awfully similar to the lesser scaup so I'm not sure which of the two.

Donald? Daffy? Howard? :)
OK, enough wisecracks. I actually don't know. Kind of a cool looking feller though.

Thanks for sharing this one, Paul. You've piqued my interest in two species that I wasn't previously aware of.
Ironically, the features that purportedly differentiate the two are not easily visible here. From this angle it looks like your duck might have the asymmetric head of the lesser scaup? The head looks a bit green (greater scaup) in front, but purple (lesser scaup) in rear. And the wing stripe is totally hidden.
You've given us a nice conundrum.

I did some more research on this duck and I'm sure now it's a lesser scaup, this is simply because a lesser will show green and purple on the head in good light where as the greater will only show the green . for all intents and purposes henceforth he shall be known as Uncle Donald

it's not so much the name 'Trevor' (although it's perfect) as how that post popped up, right behind the picture of the duck
and after the question in the subject line was 'name this duck'
  and you are not a dumb Canadian:evil:
look at Ian
and see his ducks
and see their names
and then go back and question yourself
