Agreed. Its normally very difficult to tell b/t the greater and lesser scaup but in this case with the round head and slight greenish tint I think its a fairly safe bet that its a greater.

I believe it is but they are awfully similar to the lesser scaup so I'm not sure which of the two.

Thanks for sharing this one, Paul. You've piqued my interest in two species that I wasn't previously aware of.

Ironically, the features that purportedly differentiate the two are not easily visible here. From this angle it looks like your duck might have the asymmetric head of the lesser scaup? The head looks a bit green (greater scaup) in front, but purple (lesser scaup) in rear. And the wing stripe is totally hidden.

You've given us a nice conundrum.

I did some more research on this duck and I'm sure now it's a lesser scaup, this is simply because a lesser will show green and purple on the head in good light where as the greater will only show the green :lol:. for all intents and purposes henceforth he shall be known as Uncle Donald

I've always personally called them bluebills, but technically Scaup.

and after the question in the subject line was 'name this duck'

Thanx Marie I had thought that there was a childrens story about a duck called Trevor, that I had never heard about but , the British known for there slightly different sense of humour no insults intended had me quite confused I felt like I was stuck in a Benny Hill episode and Trevor is an ok name I like uncle Donald though ,,,,,, :lol:
