Im a new digital rebel owner (18-55 lens kit).
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is possible to take B & W photos
or do i have to modify my pic's with a photo program?

If the Rebel is as similar to the 10D as I believe, you need to use an image editing program. But, it's really wasy to do, and there are plenty of Photoshop actions out there that you can use. Plus, in Photoshop you can simulate different color lens filters...lot's of creative choices.

I'm not sure about the features in the 300D one, but the new 350D has b/w feature, in camera.
Want a cool tip: If you shoot Raw with your 350D and do b/w, you can *still* get the image in full color when editing in Raw... cuz all the info is stored in the raw file. So if you did regret you only shot in b/w, you don't have to if you shoot in raw. If you shoot in jpeg, well then it's no turning back.
I myself perfer to shoot all pictures in color though and do the b/w convertion in Photoshop (using Mixing Channels).

The Digital Rebel (300D - 6.3 MP) only takes color. You'll have to desaturate (and possibly perform some other enhancements) in a photo editing program to get B/W prints.

I think you'll be much happier if you shoot your pictures in color and then covert them to B&W in Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. The reason is that you have much more control to improve marginal exposures, or even to creatively edit your photographs.
Several magazines have had articles on this topic recently, and a lot of professional photographers favor the post production method of converting to B&W.
