I'm not talking about the mirror clatter but the beeper. I just got an XT today and the only thing you hear is the mirror. No beeper when it focuses or anything else. Its set to ON but that doesnt matter. I have to see the green light in the viewfinder to be sure its focused. Gotta be a trick to it that I havent found yet. Guess if I want to hear a beep I should use my S50 right? I got the XT for the lack of shutter lag not to hear it serenade me but its irritating that stuff doesnt work.

Hi Ronbo, just got mine today too. Push the menu button and there is a menu item to turn off the beep.

Maybe it's stuck, so try turn it off, turn camera off and then turn the camera on and turn the beep on again.

I find it very useful to have some confirmation, even if it's driving some people nuts. I rather concentrate on the subject than to wander with my eye to that right corner to see if the green light is on or not. But eventually I'm going to turn it off, cuz the camera does focus pretty accurately and quick, so its more useful in the beginning to have that beep on, until you've learn to trust the camera. :)

If the XT is the same as the 10D and the 20D you only get the beep on focus if your focus mode is set to one shot. Over time you will become accustomed to the lack of an audible focus confirmation. I shoot in AI Servo most of the time and don't have an issue without the sound.

You also get it if you have the camera set in AI Focus (which sort of senses if you need Servo or not) and I also use the setting for several shots (burst mode in english?), it acts like a single shot as well, if you aren't too hard on the trigger. I use all the creative modes (P, Tv, Av and M).

You're trying to turn the damned beeper on? The first thing I always do with a new camera is find a way to turn it off.

I thought I had this problem with my 20D, it turned out everyone can hear it but me. Guess I spent too much time around jet engines.

Mine doesn't work either. Figured it's no big deal, certainly not worth sending it back.

My one is OK, if you put on the grip the beep become lower because the grip cover the beep speaker.

Yeah I'm trying to get the beeper to work not silence it. :) Ive tried every mode and setting and get no beep in autofocus no matter where the camera is set to. A Canon rep said try to remove the backup battery and regular battery for a while and that didnt help. Its just forced me to reset the time and date. For this much money I want the beeper to work. Isnt taking me long to love certain aspects of this camera like the SPEED compared to my S50. Its also much easier for me to handle with my neuropathy etc blah blah medical stuff. I used to love my old Nikon 35mm slr but film is a pita and for some reason I didnt like the feel of the D70. My thumb was always over the 4way controller but I did like the shutter release a lot better.

you know what I have a problem with my XT is I miss the sound of my film advancing with my older cameras. But I'm getting use to it, at first I look at the camera to see if anything is wrong. I bet an on looker thinks I chimping.

It's a simple hearing problem for me - tinnitis, ringing in the eaars, bad too, too many Aerrosmith concerts in the 70s!. I have to decide if it's worth upgrading to the 20D because I can hear that. CAnon said they set it lower on purpose, but if you can turn it off I don't see the point. I'd like something like On > high > low > off options.

If it's not working I would worry that there is perhaps a solder problem during manufacture that could affect other parts? Send it back.

I gave the XT to my son and he mentioned the beep. I gave him a funny look and said WHAT BEEP!. he said its weak but its there so I put my ear on the camera and pushed the button and sure enough theres a beep. almost inaudible, very fast and very high pitched. Now most cell phone are really loud to me so I kinda doubt the frequency being the cause even though age has diminished my hearing. its just so faint that unless I glue a stethoscope to it or put my ear right on the camera theres no way I can hear it. Kinda hard to look through the viewfinder with your ear on the camera so I have to look for the green AF light instead which is hard for someone who wears glasses as you cant see all the vf at one time. THere should be a way to make this beep louder or something. Its useless to me not that I miss it much. I'm used to hearing it just fine on my other cameras and I want to hear it on this one too.
