View Full Version : Flash Question (Or: Pardon my Denseness)

I've read the link to Canon flash photography a couple of times and did learn some things. I apologize in advance for being dense. I probably should have paid more attention in school. Here goes:

Today I was shooting my daughters' dress rehearsal for tomorrow night's dance recital. I was in the front row with the stage perhaps 15 feet away and the dancers 20-30 feet away. I had my 1dsmkII along with my 580ex and the 70-200f/2.8 IS. I started out with the 24-70 but its reach was just too short.

While the pictures on the whole came out quite good. (sorry, I'm still a retard when it comes to posting. I upload to pbase and last time it just rejected them. I think my file size is too large.)

Sorry for the preamble, but here's the question. I was in manual and the meter was doing nothing. No amount of switching shutter or aperture would make the meter do anything. Why? (Thanks in advance for being as simple as possible in your answer to an obvious dolt like me.)

I'm no expert here, but the meter will measure ambient light only. You need a flash meter to get the info you're looking for. The maximum distance relative to the f/stop and iso should be indicated on the back of the flash (I don't own a 580EX so I can't tell you for sure where exactly). Even if you have a flash meter you would have to have a sensor in the proximity of the subject and test fire the flash to get a reading. I think it would be easier to set the camera to Av mode and control the f/stop and allow the ETTL to do its magic.
