View Full Version : RAW + L not functioning?

I did a search but didn't come up with anything. Is anyone else having problems with the 350 and saving Raw + Jpg?

In RAW + L mode I assumed it would save my shot as a raw AND a jpeg file...?

Instead it saves to jpgs.. of the same image.

L works fine and RAW works fine but on the setting that is supposed to do both it doesn't work. Maybe it's me!

Nope, no problem. Just tried the RAW+L last night to test out the Adobe Camera Raw 3.1 and the new DNG Converter (yay, finally it's possible to edit the 350D's raw files in Photoshop CS).

Did you hit the set button after you had scrolled down to the setting? Seems like the camera is picky about that, like for the ISO selection, you have to scroll to the right ISO, click the set button, before it's actually "set".

Yes, I just checked agian =/

It saves 2 files but one isn't a raw file.

Huston we have a problem... looks like a return or a trip to Canon.

Does the file have a name? cuz if I shoot in RAW+L I get one file named IMG_0001.JPG and one called IMG_0001.CR2, the latter being the raw-file.

Felix,. I think you have to upgrade to PSCS2.. there are several threads on it in the post processing forum....

First of all, you can't directly edit a RAW file.

With the correct Canon utility or Adobe utility, you can convert a RAW file, and with some you can open a RAW file and save your editing changes separately, but you are not directly editing on a RAW file.

both files are the same.

for example

img1001.jpg and then the one that's supposed to be raw is called img1001(2).jpg

CDS is right but I think there is a workaround if you don't want to u/g to CS2 straight away.
Download Adobe Camera Raw 3.1 from

http://photoshopnews.com/2005/05/04...-raw-31-posted/

Unzip the file and bundled with the ACR 3.1 plugin is a standalone "Digital Negative Converter". Convert your 350XT raw files to the DNG format. These should open in PSCS ACR 2.4.

Ok it's an extra step but it's a free option for the moment.

I do not have PSCS myself to check this but I have read that it works.

Having recently upgraded from the 300 to the 20 i have noticed that with the 300 and hacked firmware the jpeg was actually embedded and good quality but with the 20 it is a seperate file and not very good quality , i suppose we can,t have it all ways . Ps BB won,t convert a 20D raw.

The DNG Converter that comes with Camera Raw 3.1 (which only works with Photoshop CS2 and PHotoshop Elemens 3) is the work around if you only have Photoshop CS.

You even get a smaller file using DNG, so it's not a trade-off. Just convert your CR2-files to DNG and happily open and work with them in Camera Raw 2.4 in Photoshop CS. Works like a charm and opens faster.

Back to the subject at hand. Does anyone know why my RAW+L snaps 2 jpgs instead of a cr2 and jpg?

TWDesigns, sorry for the OT, your problem sounds odd. Try reset all the settings in the camera (yeah I know its a drag) and see what happens. Do you get a raw file if you shoot just in RAW, and not RAW+L?

What zone are you using. If I remember right, you can only save a raw file in the creative modes, i.e. M, Av, Tv, A-DEP,and P. But I don't know why it would save to jpgs.

You can use DPP to convert your raw files. It should come with your camera.

I think Snibbetsj has hit the nail on the head. I am usually in the creative modes and every now and then I will go to one of the auto setting and wonder why I have a Jpeg.

If i Set it to RAW it takes RAW with no problem. If I set it to JPG it takes JPG with no problem. If I set it to RAW + JPG it takes 2 JPGS :(

I did a reset and Im shooting in M & AV mode.

It's weird because the files show up in my directory as:
IMG_2002.jpg
IMG_2002(1).jpg

The one listed with the (1) is supposed to be the RAW file I think.

Have you reformatted the card in the camera too? (grasping for last straws here as I'm all out of ideas!)

Your camera is not working properly.

What more can we do for you?

Million dollars would work I guess. Yea that would do it for now ;)

Just seeing if anyone had any ideas, since this is my first SLR, well 3rd one after 2 returns for dead pixels. I didn't know if it was me doing something wrong or not but doesnt sound like it. I'll contact Canon and see how it goes from there.

Thanks for the help!

Bummer on the string of bad cameras :( :(
Wow, that really sucks. :(

Oh yeah.. the check is in the mail

This is really an odd one.. I must say I have not seen this particular problem here before.

Never seen this type of problem, or heard about it. If you set the camera to shoot RAW+JPEG you should obtain 2 files one *.CR2 and one *.JPG (perhaps the JPG is of excellent quality) I shoot in this way almost all the time (its handy to have the jpeg ready for friends or any other quick and dirty stuff, and if there is nothing good at all in the group, I just wipe out the RAW and keep the jpegs for my archival) and never had a problem.

Thanks for the check!

Yea I've had no luck taking up photography.. Even the first lense I ordered came in with a huge gash on the inside center of the lens lol. Just one of those things I guess =)

Thanks again for all the help. Chatting with Canon now, so maybe I can find a solution!
