This is the Red-tailed Hawk family I've been watching for 2 seasons now. It looks like there 2 chicks, but I cannot tell for sure. One of the adults had to do some crow butt-kicking while I was there. It's such an amazing sight to watch them fight!

The last pic is to give you an idea how high up the nest is and how hard it is to get shots. Hopefully I'll get some better shots this weekend!

Wow...
these are fantastic! The "dog fight" is just amazing.

I watched a pair of Red Tails build a nest earlier this year.. got some nice photos.. but was really really hoping they'd "nest"

Well they had strayed a little too far out of there center of territory.. and a second pair was none too happy with there choice of location. For about two weeks there were often three or four hawks in the area at once.. and a fight or two. But in the end my hawks never did nest. I was really hoping.. they are my "local" pair,. and I've been hoping they'd nest for four years now... :(

I see that you need the same kind of photo equipment that I need, a portable, self-supported platform that is about 50 or 75 feet tall. Maybe a hot air ballon would do it.

I've been shooting Great Blue Herons that are 70-90 feet up in 100-foot eucalyptus trees, so it is the same problem.

The photos are great. I just loved the one showing the beauty of the hawk's wings, the close up. I know some eagles roll over as they come close to an enemy so they can rake them with their claws. Did the hawk try that?

Oh wow! Amazing shots you have! The fight scene was far better than F14 Tomcat fighting with MIG31, IMHO. :)
