Black & White. The colors are pale anyway, and I think B&W would make this look even better.

Composition draws the attention to the black square on the left. As the boy looks to the right, placing him left would have made him the true main subject and given more room for his thoughts.

yeah I agree - unfortunately the metal wheel in the whole does draw attention from the boy without adding to the story. If the the background told more about the location, I would work to keep it but as it is now it could be anywhere from Singapore to Hongkong. Try cropping the image down and see if it still says what you intended. Or if it is critial to the story, perhaps just use PS to de-emphasize the wheel.

wow, it really did made nice changes just by moving the subject to the left and removing any unnecessary parts of the image. thanks guys!

Your fix really does make the photo come alive! He already has a great expression on his face. By placing him off center adds to that expression because viewers are now left thinking about what is causing that expression!
