Is it the lens or the camera that gives a photo good quality??

---Okeay so check out these photo and let me know if it's the lens or the camera that allows the picture to turn out like this, creating a really nice depth of field & makes the background totally out of focus while the subject is in focus.

---the picture was shot with a canon mark 5d and the canon EF 75-300mm lens.

It is more in knowing HOW to take a good picture than WHAT is used. I might be so bold as to say there are many people that can take killer shots with an XT and the kit lens. But there are many many more people that cant get anything more than a snapshot with a 1Mk3 DS and a 70-200L. A better camera only offers a better opertunity to take a better picture, but does not guarentee it.

As far as your DOF question. Getting the background is simply useing a bigger aperature. The bigger (smaller number) the aperature the narrower the DOF is.

Simple answer - Lens in this case. Parallel focal plane, closeness to subject, and smallest f/stop controls DOF.

i see, so then it's mostly the lens that's creating that nice depth of field then?

Correct. The bigger of an aperature you have (smaller number) the more narrow the field of focus. This is what lets the background fall away into a blur and the subject stand out.

Or it could be a shorter lens on a larger format.
