View Full Version : Wireless Internet Problem

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I figure I can edit pictures on my laptop, so it may fit.
I just got my laptop (Sony Viao) for college and am having problems getting an internet connection in my house. When I search for available networks our router comes up but when I connect to it I am only connected to the local network, not the internet. I have reset the router multiple times hoping that would remedy the problem, but it hasn't. The wireless does work though, because my sister's laptop works just fine. I am thinking it is possibly a firewall issue that is blocking out access to the internet, but I have disabled both the firewall it came with and the windows firewall. Neither of those seem to be doing it.
Anyone have any ideas?

When you connect to the router do you actually get an IP address?

As far as I know, no. Is there a way I can check for this?

When you view Network Connections and right click on your wireless connection and click properties does it look like this?

Yes. Got to the start menu and click Run. Type cmd and hit enter. when the dos prompt appears type ipconfig. What does it say?

Unfortunately, I have Vista, so am unable to find at that window. Do you know how to look at that on Vista?

Well, it brought up a lot of stuff...
It gave me an IPv4 Address, Subnect Mask, Default Gateway
The ethernet adapter local area connection, tunnel adapter local area connections 6, 7, 11, and 12 all say media disconnected.

K so far looking at the IP information, everything appears correct but I don't have a DNS Server line.
Edit: Pinging my own IP worked, but sending a ping to the "4.2.2.1" IP resulted in "Destination host unreachable" 3 times then it said "Request times out." on the 4th line. Sent 4 packets, received 3, lost 1.

Ah, I found that. The QoS Packet Scheduler and Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) are both checked unlike yours, is that a problem?.

Here is the ipconfig:
try this: (from DOS)
ipconfig /release
(wait for it to run thru)
then,
ipconfig /renew
return to Windows and see if you can establish a connection then.

I guess you have tried the network setup? (Wireless setup) I wonder if uninstalling the network adapter and rebooting would help? I'm not an expert just trying to help.

you don't see the DNS server line unless you type ipconfig /all
hopefully there's something there...

QoS Packet Scheduler doesn't really matter, but it's not really used for a home network so you can uncheck it. I've heard that TCP/IPv6 can cause some problems so personally I'd uncheck it.

Are you specifying ip's manually or are they all DHCP?
I personally found vista easy to connect to my router.. But there are a few things i found that i couldnt do with vista i could with xp.. The router has to be broadcasting the SSID so others can see it.. I found (only router anyway) if i disabled that feature (so others cant see my SSID) i lost connection..
Try pinging www.google.com to confirm if you have outside access. But i guess thats not working..
Few others i can think of is, is there any security on it.. ie WEP WPA key you need to match up to the router to gain access? Do you need to forward any ports for that laptop?? With mine.. i have to specify my laptop say 192.168.1.60 to allow it access. That also guess around your sisters laptop taking your IP.. just like an address.. I find its easier ME telling them what IP to use then DHCP as we have 3 machines hooked up the router.. For some freak reason my laptop wants the IP my mums laptop is working on. it will cancel both out.
Its really hard to diagnose the prob to be honest without being sat in front of the machine :(..

:):):):):):):) I GOT IT WORKING!!!!!!!
Here was the problem: apparently there is an update for this wireless card that windows automatic update will not detect. I downloaded the update off the internet and updated and it works now.
Thank you for all the help, I really appreciate it.

Good stuff. Now just make sure you enable some security features for your wireless router (i.e., WEP key, etc.) to ensure that no one else can access your system :)

Yeah, I had a similar problem with a Netgear PCI card, I ended up just replacing it with a TP-Link which, surprisingly, was *much* better

My mum has a viao and windows update has nothing to do with the viao software it uses. Theres another program that it uses to update there own stuff with.. Sometimes i hate sony with there thinking, along the lines of using there own Memory card fitments, there own lossless file compression (ATrac) and other bits like that But its reliable stuff never the less..
Glad you got it up and running again :)
