For $60 it is probably either a pirate copy or a socalled "backup" copy where it in the therms say you must own the software already.

The cheapest way to get PS CS is to buy an older version. For example an OEM copy of PS 6 can be bought for around $50 in Germany. Then you can upgrade to PS CS fully legal.

Why do I hear so much about buying version 6.0 in germany? I just looked on http://www.ebay.de and there's heaps of copies of PS 6.0 there, i'd be tempted to buy from there and buy the upgrade here in NZ. I'm using the trial version, it's a great upgrade from CS for RAW users.

Because upgrading from an older OEM version is the cheapest way to get a full legal PS CS.

In some coutries it is not legal to sell OEM software without hardware but German courts have ruled that in Germany it is legal.

This is the way I used I saved alot of money that way without breaking laws or copyrights.

I really was lucky when I got my full version of Photoshop. I had gotten an LE version in a package with a scanner and the year later Adobe offered an upgrade to full Photoshop *for the same price as those poor things that had bought the same version in full version, not LE*. So now I've only upgraded every other version, since. I'm debating on the CS2 now, since I did get the CS for free (from Adobe for book translations) and last time I paid was for Photoshop 7.

That's basically the same route I took. I had to get on the phone with Adobe and argue (beg) because they weren't initially going to allow the upgrade if I hadn't paid for LE. I finally got the right person on the phone, and she took pity on me and sold me the full version at the upgrade price.

I got my second copy later when I switched from Apple to PC, and I bought a crossover upgrade. It turns out I need two copies because I currently have 4 computers that I use PS on.

I went to ebay.de and googled photoshop 6.0 and had loads of hits. Does anyone know of a particular seller they'd recommend? One that speaks English (though most Germans I met while I was there do) and doesn't mind shipping to New Zealand would be good :)

You can have it downloaded, cracked and running in under 45 minutes. Apparently. Personally I wouldn't know as that kind of behaviour is disgusting. Getting an illegal copy and using the money you saved to buy a 17-40 is just wrong.

Will the Photoshop 5 LE OEM version qualifies for upgrade to PS CS2? I have a feeling that it won't.

No, I think you need at least 6, but more likely verison 7. Adobe scratched those "cheap" upgrade, I guess they realized people like me was using them too much.

But buying a copy online (that is not a verison someone upgraded from) is a good idea. I bougth my copy of Freehand that way. A guy who went to Illustrator wanted to sell his copy, so I jumped on the occasion and was able to upgrade my copy and I ended up paying about half of the full cost of a new version. (Although now Adobe has bought up Macromedia, so now I guess I'll have to conform into Illustrator too.... but i'll do it kicking and screaming.)

Any full version of PS will do. From Adobe site
