I would like known If a good 3 section tripod (manfrotto, gitzo, benro, etc.) is really usable at the max height (with column extended) with some wind and with a body + lens between a range from 2-3 kg (4.4 - 6.6 lbs) or not.

Also is if sufficient a good ball head in this kind of situations or is even important a column extended not more then 10 cm (0.32 ft)?

The purpose for using a tripod is usually to hold a camera/lens rigidly so that it cannot move. Extending the center column of ANY tripod will reduce the ability of the tripod to hold the camera/lens steady. As a general rule, you should never extend the center column of any tripod when outdoors in a windy situation.

if it's a good brand the 4-section would be sturdier.

Interesting thing.
How much sturdier?

Is this something really usable or not?
Or only sometimes?

on a good tripod i would probably always buy 4-section. i think you or i wouldn't be able to tell any difference.

if you need the center column use it but i would not buy a tripod that i would need to use the center column alot unless i needed something really light weight for travel.

For the moment I must not buy anything but I am interested to have a better idea for the future.

For example, in general, locking systems of the various sections on a tripod, are really reliable?
