Wanted to go for the clothes catalogue sort of pic - only had 10 seconds of patience from him before dinner...

Please be clear and critical regarding what I could do better with the picture, I am really trying to learn!

Not sure if that is a glass wall in the right side of the frame, but it could be cropped out. Also it looks as though the focus really didnt fall fully on your son. Adorable facial expression. Oh and the Wing of the gargoyle thing poking into his leg, bothers me just a tad ;) Other wise I think it was great.

I find myself wondering what is behind you, the background behind him does not lend alot to the photo. I see a stairwell with lots of big windows, if he had been facing the windows you would maybe get better light on him, not that it is bad here, but you could have also maybe shot up at him from down on the stair case. Just throwing out some ideas. I find setting up background very difficult too but when you get it right (usually by accident as much as anything else) it really looks good.
