Ahhh......spring has sprung and so has the need for some newer glass. A few weeks back I went the Zeiss route and purchased a 135/3.5 Sonnar. Great lens and for the money, a real bargain. I have wanted a tilt & shift lens for a while (product photography) but was hesitant to splurge on one of the Canon offerings. I have read a bit about the Hartblei (Ukraine) lenses and found one on EBAY for a reasonable price. The lens arrived this week and first impressions were good! The thing is built like a tank (and actually looks like one!!) I have a lot to learn concerning the tilt and shift functions but I decided to try a few shots of my daughter Julia playing at the park. Surprisingly, I was able to manually focus (it is a MF lens) and come away with a few sharp pictures. Colour and contrast are spot on; sharpness is very good and bokeh is quite nice. I am sure liking my 1D and its large bright viewfinder.......I don't think these MF lenses would be as enjoyable with my old DRebel. Enjoy the pictures and thanks for looking!

Hmmm...........interesting lens!!! I would sure like to see some interesting shots from a T&S lens. A request..........can you do a mini-review of this lens?? I think it would start a trend in this forum ;-)

And beautiful pics!!!

Thanks for the comments!!

roanjohn........I'll see if I can get somewhat of a review together for this lens. I am still struggling to learn how to use the T/S functions! I have read a few things about this type of glass and apparently it has a little bit of a learning curve to it.........

Those are some great shots! Excellent exposure, DOF, focus... it is what the rest of us are trying for.

Thanks for the kind comments........just realized that the lens is actually an 80mm not 90mm........strange that the EXIF data showed 90mm??

roanjohn....thanks for the link! Have already seen that but it does inspire one to get into this tilt & shift thing!! I will have a SMALL review ready for the weekend........need to spend a little more time with this beast!

Fantastic pics! I have been thinking about getting a TS lens, but the Canon TS-E has such a prohibitive cost. I'm glad that you have much success with the Hartblei - how much is it? Have you tried the Novoflex or Horseman Tilt/Shift lenses? I am so interested, post more shots....

I'm confused, I dunno what the advantages of a TS-E lens is. Can't you just adjust the camera to get the angle you want? I've tried googling for explainations, but they're all over my head *shrug*.

Nice shots btw!

TS lenses gives much perspective and DOF control. Shifting the lens up, down, left or right corrects the image for converging lines, such as the keystoning effect one gets when pointing the camera upward to take a picture of a tall building. "Shifting" the lens (which I think moves the front elements independent of the others) will correct this distortion and make the lines parallel.

The "tilt" function allows the lens to be tilted up or down. When you tilt the lens down, you change the plane of the DOF, and you can have the horizon, nearby objects such as rocks or plants within arms reach and everything in between in sharp focus.

I haven't even heard of those T/S lenses!! Are they medium format? Made in Eastern Europe? I'll have to look that up............the Hartblei is a bargain for the price and the build is really good!

How do you get the photographic frame effect? or more to the point, what software do you use?

Thanks again for the kind comments.......

soupdragon......frame comes from a really old program called FrameMaker. Just tweaked one of their stock frames until I had something I liked.

Drisley.........you're right!! Does seem redundant! (psst....don't tell anyone but since her parents are both German citizens, Julia holds dual citizenship!!)
