This was a quick shot as we approached the main entrance.

I can accept the selective coloring here - if that's what it is.
But I cannot accept the important highlights being blown out and without detail.
Otherwise, I like the lighting and the composition and level of interest.

Thanks for your comments and bringing the blown highlights to my attention, Bob. I defintely need a new set of glasses.
There was very little color in the original shot - just a hint of dark blue and the indication of blondish hair.
Is this better?

This is just me, but with subject matter like this I don't use any PP like color isolation. Subject matter like this speaks for itself without like embellishment. That's just me. If I shot it I would use the channel mixer --> monochrome and create a powerful image.
You captured a good shot that is powerful and speaks to homelessness.

With original colors.
And a question - in the version posted by Flo, it is really sharp. The ones I have posted are definitely not, though on my monitor (when not on POTN) and out of my printer the results are very sharp. What am I doing wrong?

The original you posted isn't very sharp for sure, its also quite noisy?
I use a 30D.and have set all the functions manually. I can't seem to see the EXIF in this photo.
Plus, I would suppose you were trying to get this off without him seeing you, so there is blur motion as well.

I have a matte print of the shot in my hand & it is sharp and without noise. I am exporting from Lightroom and when I upload to POTN, it doesn't carry over well. I know it's something I am doing incorrectly in the export/upload process.
He was very agitated - between his movements and the birds, it was hard to find a moment when they were (almost) still.

I thought he was holding a bird at first. LOL
But really, it's a cool shot.
