I have read too many reviews on the 3 following lenes.I have read the "Good" and the "Bad" on all. Need some help...... I think right now the Sigma is "OUT"..too many bad reviews.

CANON EF 17-40MM F4 L
Sigma 17-35 F2.8-4 EX DG ASP HSM Canon AF
Tamron 17-35 F2.8-4 Di Canon

or maybe

Sigma 12-24 F/4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM Canon

Thanks!

I hear Sigma is pretty soft at the 12mm end... If I were thinking that wide I would have thought Canon 10-22.

I own Tamron 17-35 and I'm pretty happy with it. I'm unable to say how it compares to 17-40L, but to me, the pictures look fine. Notice I didn't say pin sharp? Yeah... but somehow I doubt you can expect pin sharp anything this wide, check out MTF charts...

It's pretty hard to beat the wide angle optics of the 17-40, as well as the build quality. I would try them all out somewhere first, so you know from first hand experience, because I know how it is to read review after review and just when you think you have it figured out you read another one that changes your mind. I find that the full time manual focusing of the Canon to be hard to beat on the L lenses, along with the weather proof, feel and build quality, but unless you hold them in your hand, and look through them, you just don't know.

I'm buying something like this pretty soon too, just that my options are 17-40/4, 16-35/2.8 and Sigma 12-24/4.5-5.6. Sigma is nice because I would still get 16mm on low end, but I hate changing aperture in zoom.
Anyway in next week or two I will test those 3 lenses myself (for now I use only 16-35/2.8 but it's from agency and not mine) and if you won't buy them yet, I can let you know at least difference between 17-40 and 12-24.

I'm leaning pretty hard towards adding the Canon to my own line up. Just need to save the money, shame they make me feed and clothe my kids!

He he he.... That's why we can afford it now...ours are all out of the house. Now we can reward ourselves for surviving:lol:

Hey digital guy...I'd go with the Canon 17-40..... you just don't hear anything bad about that lens.

Please let me know.
I can't get to the Photo Store until next weekend to try these out.

I consider myself a True "Canon" Fan and usually do not buy anything else.( I have 12 Canon FD lenes in my closet right now)
I have 2 daughters in college now and 1 wedding next summer to pay for.

Cross the Sigma 17-35mm off you list fast.. it's not even close to the Canon 17-40mm. I'd certainly take the Canon over the Tamron too.

I'd say the only two to consider are the 17-40mm f/4L and the Sigma 12-24mm

Your right!
Those are the 2 closes to my heart at the moment.Read some great things about the Sigma 12-24mm and I like the wider lens. But I am still a True Canon Fan;so I am Very confused. I do not want to go down the EF-S route with the 10mm.

I've had my 17-40L for a little over two weeks, I'm impressed with the build quality and the sharpness of it! It's on my camera most of the time!

How is a picture at 17mm f/4?
Have you had the chance to do one?
Is 17mm wide enough for you? I still like the :
Sigma 12-24 F/4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM Canon
I like the 12mm.

Thanks

I have some, I will have to load one on the net and will then post it.

Do you want a 100% crop or the whole photo?

For me the 17-40 is wide enough, at least for now.

This is a photo of our City Hall, It was a very gray day. The only PP was to size it for the web and the crop:

This is a 100% Crop of tower.

I think this sharp, let me know what you think.
