Guys,

i just got published in a national magazine!

Ok, so it isn't Vogue or Newsweek but its a start. It is a magazine called 'Powerkite' that is published here in the UK.
I sent them a handful of pics and some text about our local club a fliers and they used it. Five pics over 3 pages.
No money changed hands but its a great start for me and something under my belt.

Well chuffed!

I didn't really want the money to be honest, it was more for the club and to help get us known in the world of powerkites.
Yes i did get a credit. The last line of the text says 'Photos by jon Speed' and my web address.

It was nice of you to give them the photos free, if you didn't want money, but I do hope you got a signed contract outlining their usage... Otherwise, they can publish them as they choose with no compensation to you.

BTW... Great shots.

To be honest, like i said, i was not interested in a reward for these pics. Helping the club (in which i am a member) become recognised is reward enough.
Whilst it would be a great thrill to make money off my shots sometimes i think its not always about just that. I enjoyed taking those shots and i enjoyed seeing them in print. I also enjoyed the smiles that i gave those guys (my friends) in the shots at seeing themselves in a glossy magazine.

If i had asked for payment or came across to heavy i doubt they would have ever been printed.

I understand why its not a good idea to give away pics. I have read countless threads on it over the past few months but for these few i see no harm whatsoever. I am a very, very amateur photographer and this gives me something to show future clients should i ever get that good!

I did ask them NOT to use them for anything else but their magazine and i have the word on that in writing.

I have also offered them my services for future events - however i have made it clear these will not be for free.

Nice shots :D I had a pair of Flexifoils for a while, got really busy though, something had to give, a lot of fun though!

Well this is how it starts, get some shots published, get a good reputation...

The hard part is trasitioning, if you want to, to paid work. I still do a lot of work for free (all friends/family), but every now and then, one of those people will pass along my details and make a recomendation, they often pay, as they expect to from the start :D
