I have a 20D with a Sigma 500 Super and a Phoenix slave flash. I get pretty good results with horizontal pictures using the Phoenix for a bounce background fill. What are the opinions on this item for a little help?

Where I have problems is with vertical shots. As you know you get the dark shadows on the opposite side of the on camera flash. Using what I have what would you suggest? Use the Phoenix direct from the other side? Do a bounce with one and direct with the other?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Your problem is likely that of the flash unit being on the hotshoe. For a vertical portrait shot, this is not good. You need a flash bracket and an off-camera shoe cable. That way, your flash will be directly above the lens no matter which way you hold it.
