View Full Version : Serious problem with OCF

Hi all. I recently purchased a Skyport to try out this OCF stuff. I have a 40D with 430EX flash on a tripod. I purchased a Hama hotshoe adapter and seperate cable to plug into my Skyport receiver for the flash unit. However, anything over 500 shutter speed the image is blown out and anything under only half the image is displayed on the viewfinder. It seems as if it is not sync'ing correctly. When I press the test button the transmitter it seems to work fine.

Am I doing something incorrectly?? Please HELP...

Couple of searches on the forum later and I think I may have figured it out :D Seems I need to play with the manual settings on the flash. At least I'm getting a complete exposure now.

Keep the shutter speed below 1/250, that's the camera's 'Max Sync Speed'.

Also, it sounds as if you're over-exposing the ambient lighting. Shutter speed has little effect on a flash exposure (assuming you stay below you're camera's sync speed like Mike mentioned).


Of course, it helps to have some sample images to look at. Otherwise everyone just throws out wild guesses that do nothing to help your situation.

The Skyports will necessitate the use of manual mode on the flash. You should be using manual on the camera too. Using the camera meter and the lowest ISO as a start adjust the meter so you are quite underexposed with the ambient light. Then add in the flash at 1/2 power to start and adjust from there.

Hey Dave, that is EXACTLY what I did. Didn't think to switch to manual mode on the flash unit. I started off with 1/16 and worked my way from there using a variety of shutter speeds.

And Derek, you are correct, I definitely overexposed the ambient. All sorted now. I'll post an image if I can for you guys to C&C for me.
