I am thinking about getting an EOS film camera to use as a backup. Will my 430EX work on only old EOS film body, or does it have to be a newer one?

I think it'll work as a TTL flash. The flash manual should cover this question if none of the old timers can help you out ;)

It depends upon which camera for film you acquire. I have an EOS 30, which is a type A camera, i.e. with an EX flash it works like a digital camera. In other words, it supports E-TTL (but not E-TTL II).

Older cameras are of type B, which implies that they rely on flash TTL metering, not E-TTL. That gives you a somewhat limited capability, but they still work.

All Canon "EX" flashes are backwards compatible to any EOS body. They will automatically work in either TTL, E-TTL, or E-TTL II as needed.
