I've seen a lot of references to "close-up" filters and, I have to be honest, I don't know the first thing about them.
What are the benefits? Detriments?
How do they work?

So that's the idea behind them; a "macro" kind of thing?

yes the front of your lens will be very close to the subject a few cm's.

That's a great shot.
As I'm deathly allergic to bee stings, though, I'll live vicariously through your shots!
Anyone got an epinephrine pen?

Yes, get some good (2 element) close up lense(s). Type in "2 element close-up lenses" in Google and you'll get to a list of current ones - I forget the website, sorry. They are portable, fit many lenses, don't lose light = no increase in f/stop. I have 3 Canon 250D, 500D. Of course, I would go to a good macro lens first, good telephoto with extension tubes next, and close-ups last. Getting closer isn't always the best idea.

A close-up lens changes the optics of the lens it's attached to. It shortens the lens (combination's) focal length, so it's sort of like putting on extension tubes, only backwards (extension tubes increase the lens extension while holding the focal length the same while close-up lenses hold the lens extension the same while shortening the focal length). With the lens at infinity, the close-up lens will make it focus at whatever the close-up lens' focal length is (some are sold in diopters, which is 1/focal length in meters; a +4 diopter is a 1/4 meter=250 mm focal length lens).
