View Full Version : 10D or Rebel XT?

My Digital Rebel 300 bit the dust recently and the insurance company is going to cover it. :D I now need to decide whether I will use the funds ($900) to purchase a new Rebel XT or whether I should go with the older 10D. I primarily shoot early morning landscape photography. What I liked about the older Rebel was that I could use the hack to enable mirror lockup. That dramatically improved my photos and has become a priority for me. On the other hand, I blow my images up to 16"x24" and sell them in galleries and art fairs. An increase in pixels would also be helpful to maintain greater detail. What I really want is a 1Ds MarkII, but I can't even dream of spending that much right now. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks!

I've never used the 10D, however with the increased MP in the XT, I would think it's a better choice for larger prints.

Also, let's not forget you don't need a hack to use mirror lockup with the Rebel XT.

I had the same choice about a week or so ago. I loved the features on the XT and was impressed with the reviews. However, I was a little disappointed when I actually held one. I thought the XT felt too plasticy and small in my hand. I decided to go with the 10D. It cost me about $170 less ($630 on promotion) and I figured I'll use it for a couple years and then upgrade to the 20D or whatever variation Canon has at that time. I haven't received it yet, so I don't have any comments on its use, yet.

If you have some extra money, I would go with the 20D.

I second that. $900 gets you very close to a 20d. Do it if you can. If not, you'll probably want to go with the XT due to the better iso performance given what you're shooting. I say this after just having made the same decision and deciding on a used 10d. I held the XT and it just felt like a toy. I couldn't do it.
