View Full Version : *Post Your Film Shots*

I'm sure that I'm not the only person who still shoots film these days. I know there are other forums that are specific to this but it doesn't mean we can't have our own little thread for film.
So post as many shots as you want and try to tell us the camera and the film used.
Here's a couple of mine for a start.
Both are shot with my Mamiya C330 and Portra 400NC

My stuff is all crud, but I'll play:
1. Took this one about 34 years ago with an Oly OM-1 with 50mm f/1.4. Kodak slide film of some sort (home developed, so probably Ektachrome).

2. This one's from June 1995, again with an OM-1 and 50mm f/1.4. Fuji G-200? film.

3. And a more recent one from 2004. Canon Elan II with 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 II USM using Fuji Reala.

Dark bathroom? For my first roll I cut a couple of arm holes in a cardboard box and draped a heavy cloth over it. In a dark bathroom it was fine. I think I'm going to get a change bag though.

I was never a fan of HP5 but loved FP4 and PanF.. From about 1975 until the mid '90s I'd like a dollar for every roll of Tri-X I shot though,,I loved the stuff.. I shot a heap of theatre and stage photography rating Tri-X at 1600iso or even 3200iso developed in ID11 or D76.. I had push processing Tri-X down to a fine art..
PanF is a beautiful film for studio work.. I would shoot PanF 120/220 in my studio rated at 40iso and pulled back the development by about 15%.. Grain was non-existant and the tonal range would match Tri-X..
I didn't need to experiment with developers,,I only used ID11 or D76..

These are really 2 different beasts. NC is for natural color and VC is for Vivid Color. As Kodak's website says, VC is good for adding contrast at times when contrast is low as such on an overcast day. And NC is good when you have too much contrast such as on a sunny day.
They are tools to make photographs with when needed.

There's something about film...looks so much "realer" than digital
I looked at the whole thread, and I really think there are some good images here, but how can we talk about the "look" of film when viewing it on the web? Every one of these images has been scanned, and is now appearing on a monitor. Their "film qualities" no longer exist. They ARE digital.
I really do believe that large prints from film have qualities I like, but you can't see them on a monitor.

How about grain structure, colour representation, tonal values, dynamic range, etc, etc..
They may well be digital now but they do still retain some elements of film quality.
They must do as you can tell a lot of the time if the exposure was on film or digital.

Well maybe not DR, unless you're using a pretty much top of the line scanner. But I will say that my scanned negs take very little work to get the colours right (unless they were stored incorrectly) where sometimes finding that right combination for digital can be a challenge. I also agree that certain film scans have a certain look and feel that I've never seen reproduced by digital ... unfortunately not many of my images have this quality!
hofajoab
14th of July 2009 (Tue), 08:33
Well I was just saying that it would be ignorant to say that all the qualities of film are completely gone once they've been digitised, although, obviously some are lost along the way of course.

Scanning film (or prints) digitally captures the "look" of the film in the grain and tone. I don't know if a consumer film scanner can capture the full dynamic range of B&W film, and doubt a monitor can display it, but I don't think it's any less than photographic paper.

That is not correct. They are scanned into a digital format, but they are still hold the film qualities. Negative film scanned properly will hold onto the much higher highlight retention that negative film has over even the best dSLR. I've proven it to myself shooting negative film on bright cloudless days outside when the sun is high in the sky and film can hold detail in the highlights where a dSLR would have all sorts of trouble and would end up with dark shadows and blown highlights.
Attached is a photo from my 5D (wide view and darker) that I developed in LR2 and even had to use fill light of about 35. The other is 200 speed consumer film, negative was scanned. These are taken a year apart but at the same location, same time of day and both had sunny skies. Notice how great the highlights are in the film scan and how light the shadows are compared to the 5D photo.
So scanning film doesn't make them digital. Their film qualities are maintained! Now if films scanners can "record" such a wide range of colors and brightnesses, why can't dSLRs do it at the point of capture?!

I rescanned the picture I posted before of the wiener dog at 4800dpi, 16-bit to look at the shadows/highlights. Lightening the deepest shadow (the foreground man's sunglasses), I could make out trees and a few reflected people. I could even see that there were buttons on a person's shirt! Surely the highlights in the scene were blown? Nope, the brightest highlight was another man's white T-shirt, and all but the very brightest parts still had some silver defining its wrinkles. Do it! The hasselblad pics you've posted in these forums have been your strongest work IMHO.....and that 50mm F.1.2 on kodachrome 25 is a great look too. Too bad that kodachrome was discontinued

The first one is the Espada Dam in San Antonio, and no bonus points for identifying the second one. Both were done in the early 90's. Both Ilford FP4, developed in HC110. Both with a 4x5 Cambo view camera. The Espada Dam was done with a 90/5.6 Super Angulon, and the Half Dome was done with an 8-1/2" Ilex Paragon.

Actually, that photo of the Half Dome was from Glacier Point, and the worst part of that trek was hauling the view camera from the car about 100 feet to where I set it up. There are probably two or three hundred million pictures of Half Dome from that spot. And every one of them is subtly different from all the rest.
That image was also fogged for reasons I've never determined. I was never able to print it conventionally. But digital controls are a lot more powerful. One day I'll go back and do it again.

I agree Stregone, it's rewarding. I'm curious, did you use an orange filter for the battlefield to bring out the clouds? They look good.
I had a lot of trouble loading my last roll because the spool wasn't completely dry too. Most of that looks like dust though, not scratches. Steaming the shower a little before developing settles the dust, then going directly from the rinse to hanging while in there has helped me a lot. I stay out until the emulsion is dry (overnight) and have had very little dust to remove from my scans.

I find most of my dust issues are from the scanner itself collecting dust. I keep a cloth and some eye glass cleaner on my desk and clean it often. I too hang my negs in a bathroom after running hot water for 30 seconds or so to create some steam.

No filter. Although I just read about using red/orange filters to bring out clouds the other day and want to try it out. I just exposed for the sky and then pushed the foreground a bit in lightroom with the fill light slider. I only got 2 or 3 pictures from that outing, from the roll I already had in my camera that i topped off. I walked around in 90 degree heat for a couple hours filling another whole 36 exposure roll...and I loaded the film wrong and the film never advanced. Found out when I developed it and it came out blank. Oops! The sky was awesome that day. I've been keeping an eye out, but it hasn't been the same since :(
Yeah my last roll I developed I revised my procedures a bit. Before I would keep the film hanging untill I felt like cutting and scanning it. On that one picture that wasn't for a couple days. And then cutting the whole roll up into strips, setting them down on my desk, and scanning them one by one. Now I steam the bathroom up a bit, and then cut 2 6 frame strips off and immediately put them in the scanner and scan them, Leaving the rest hanging in the bathroom. After I scan the strips I put them into 3 ring binder sleeves and go cut 2 more strips. After I started doing that I have had pretty much no dust!

Yellow, orange and red filters were standard equipment, along with a polariser in every landscape photographer's kit..
I have shot landscapes combining a polariser and red filter.. The sky comes out almost black but the clouds still their normal tone.. It's a lot of fun to experiment..

Does anybody have any tips about using a polarizer on a TLR?
The trick is to maintain the same rotation. I have found it easiest to put the camera on a tripod and then manually hold the polarizing filter in front of the viewing lens to orient it, and then in front of the taking lens to make the exposure. The typically large polarizer we use for Canon lenses will be abundantly large for hand-holding the filter in front of a tripod-mounted TLR.

It is possible that the light conditions (between the two different days) were exact. What about humidity levels? High humidity = softer contrast, open shadows, & better highlights on both film & digital................tw

Question: I've heard that t-max films don't do well in Rodinal. Obviously you've had sucess with it... why do you think other people don't like it? Why does it work for you?
It works quite well for me in the right dilution. Because its an acutance developer it doesn't soften the silver halide so it shows the grain more but produces sharper images. The key to Rodinal with t-max films is agitation. You need to agitate for the first minute then 5 inversions every minute after. Because of the thick emulsion if you don't agitate enough you get very uneven development.
T-max 400 in rodinal 1:50 behaves a lot like tri x 320 professional as far as contrast and great shadow detail. The problem I think most people have had with t-max films is they don't find the right developer. HC 100 is OK, t-max developer is way to contrasty at the recommended strength. I think at something like 7 or 8 to one and really long times things get better. Most people that don't process are also ones that usually don't like t max films.
I tested quite a few dev/film combos in the mid 1980s and t-max 400 and rodinal 1:50 was my favorite. I think that tri x 320 pro sheet film in a special dilution of HC 100 was maybe a bit better but for roll films this is the combo for me.

I say kodak because that's the easiest product for me to get.
D-76 is a very good all around developer. For a medium format slow film like Ilford 50 I think I would recommend HC 110 to.
Here I found this. Something down lower on the page about HC 110.

Yea, I know. I would love to get a Rollei but I'm pretty happy with my C330 at the moment. One thing I really really want is a Hasselblad SWC.

Thats SWEET. Man for being as wide as it is 38mm its really distortion free. A good friend had a couple of them laying around his studio. I tried to buy one off him a few years back with no luck.

Love Airfrogs portraits and MG30Ds black and white......
Thank you, Ilford Delta 3200 is a really interesting film...the grain can really add a nice effect to certain subjects. Nice B&W photo by the way.
And Airfrogs, your portraits are stunning. I'm very envious.;)
Shot with Kodak Retina on Kodak 400 B&W film. I got this camera from my grandfather, so i tried to use it. I find it quite hard :s lack of viewfinder makes life hard.

That's very cool that your grandfather gave you that camera. By the way, nice capture.

Here's a scan from last night:
http://www.rickdenney.com/images/floyd_tombstones_lores.jpg
Tombstones, Floyd, Virginia, 2009.
This image was made using a Pentax 6x7 on Fuji Reala. The scan file is half a gigabyte and contains 93 megapixels. Yet it is resolved well enough (at least in the focus plane) to apply basic corrective sharpening with a radius of 1 pixel. Scanned at 4000 SPI on a Nikon 8000ED film scanner.
Tone-wise, I really pushed this one down into the depths, but my visualization was of bright tombstones shrouded in mystery. Fog might have worked, too, but it wasn't foggy that day.

Those images are so sharp! Are they much sharper when you scan the negatives compared to 4x6s developed at your average 1hr photo shop?

Typically your local one hour joint is scanning the negs to make those 4x6s. And not doing it with any sort of quality in mind.
I stopped getting prints from the 1hr places a few months ago and do all my own scanning. Im not saying my results are as good as whats posted here, but my home scans are most certainly better than the CDs and 4x6s I was getting from the Walmarts, and Wolfs, and Targets of the world.

You really can't tell how sharp they are by what you see here.
But when you print that 6x7 medium-format negative, scanned at 4000 dots/inch to make a 93-megapixel image, at 16x20, THEN you can tell how sharp they are. (Hint, I can downsample the image to make that 16x20 print.)
What makes them look better than the 4x6's at the lab is that the tones have already been adjusted by the photographer in Photoshop. I find that their prints of my negatives made with prime lenses are too contrasty by half, rendering the print to soot and chalk. And the colors are over-saturated to the point of being comical. Now, I like contrast and saturation, but it has to be controlled.
I paid less for my Pentax 6x7 with metered TTL prism, and three lenses (45, 55, and 105) than I paid for my 10D, body only. Yes, film is expensive in the long run, but I'm not a production shop and I don't mind those incremental costs.
(I do get excellent 4x6 prints from good pro labs, however. Most recently I've been mailing stuff to A&I in Hollywood.)

Haven't shot film in years. These would have been taken with my old 1n and normally Fuji Reala. I did use other films, but during this time it was mostly that film. I liked it and I could buy it in bulk on eBay. These were likely scanned on a Minolta scanner that I no longer have. SLOW process, and is what finally pushed me to buy a used 10D!
