I just picked up the Canon XL2, andmore recently, the Digital Canon Rebel. As I do various shooting for nature and landscapes, I'm looking for a decent zoom lens for the Rebel. Does anybody have some suggestions for a good/decent zoom lens that isn't too hugely priced?

Thank you so much

I have the Canon 28-135 and I love it. Also, the Tamron 28-70 is relatively proper around here. Also, check the Lens FAQ here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56752) for more recommendations.

Finally, welcome to the forum! Hope your wallet survives this place :D

Budget AND approx. desired zoom range would be a big help, otherwise the list will be very long. A single lens won't cover landscape and wildlife effectively.

Welcome :-)

Haha, well thank you all for the nice replies and friendly welcomes. I appreciate it!

In terms of the lens, I'm not looking for anything too amazing, just...one that is decent and wont wreck a potentially good shot due to lack of quality. Probably in the few/several hundred dollar range. I'd say with an approx zoom range of 5x or so at the least.

Feel free to tell me if I'm way out of the loop for what I'm looking for, I won't be offended. Just trying to get myself a little further educated about my options. I want to have some fun with it first before I hugely upset my wallet again.

If there is anything else that would be helpful, let me know.

Thanks!

When you want more zoom range, you will (most of the time) lose the image quality. WIth that being said, Canon 28-135IS may fit your needs. It has decent optics, and good zoom range. AND it's got IS to help reducing your hand shake. It's around $350 used.

Or, Sigma has 18-125 and 18-200. I haven't heard too many reviews of 18-200, but 18-125 has very positive reviews. AND it's less than $300. Those lenses starting 18mm should be wide enough for walk-around useage.
