View Full Version : Silencing a 20D?

I have done some shooting recently where every time I took a shot, I apparently caused a distraction (it was a very quiet environment). It was the shutter mirror combo, as I had the beeper off. Once again, I was asked to turn the ‘sound’ off my camera (people just don’t get it, real cameras do actually make that sound, where do they think the recording for their P&S’s came from?).

Anyway, wisdom sought here? I did thing about one of these, but it is not particle:

Seriously though, I suspect there is nothing I can do here, has anyone else had this issue, or come up with any creative solutions?

I highly doubt there is much you can do. Its just a sound that cameras make. I mean, you could buy a point and shoot, those are quiet! Other than that... it's like trying to make a 100$ silent car. You can't. THere are moving parts that just make noise.

I may be wrong though, I'm stupid.

I did some shooting this weekend with my film Elan7 and it seemed noticably quieter than the 20D. Would have thought that the 20D could have been designed similiarly to minimize noise.

You could have a partner or someone with you cough "conveniently" in time with the mirror slap. :p

You could try one of these. A little pricey though :-) !

Or...

Record a custom sound of you coughing and set it as the shutter sound

Sound blimp is good. I've seen it used at the movie sets very close to the microphone.

EDIT: After seeing the price and their patented hi-tech silencing compound (styrofoam) you might want to make one yourself.

Canon remote + lunchbox + styrofoam... Don't know why you'd want to silence the lens though... if it's usm it quiet anyways.

Hope this helps

800$ is way too much. Unless of course, someone else is buying it for you. :)

This should be easy enough to make. I dont think lens noise would be a problem.

Buy a longer lens and stand further away?

I'm sure I remember somewhere reading how someone silenced his drebel but putting a little padding around the area the mirror 'slaps' against.

Depends how much you like you warranty really.

Just hope you aren't taking candid pictures that require silence... That'd be creepy.

once again comments about people trying to be stalkers or something arises because someone wants a camera that doesn't make quite so much noise. You know, there actually ARE some instances where having a noisy camera just isn't convenient, such as, say, maybe a chess match, where people are silent in concentration, or maybe if you're able to take photos at a ballet or other theater production.

No that form of stealth not required, it was at a babies dedication service, I was there at the request of the babies parents, my sister and brother-in-law.

I seem to remember my EOS50 having a silent and fast film rewind mode. Perhaps they could have put in a silent and fast mirror mode? The 350D makes no where near as much noise!

Next time yes, probably. Already have the lens, but it lessens my available angles and messes with perspective a bit (i.e. shots at telephoto shots often look like telephoto shots!)

As I was comparing and contrasting models and brands before buying my 20D, at least a couple of reviews I read mentioned the "loud" shutter as compared to other cameras (the 1D MII, and others I think)... you could always upgrade

I never meant anything by it. It was a little joke to try to lighten the mood. Seems like the only real option this guy has, is to spend 800$ on something to silence it, or build something which might be a huge pain in the ass too.

I'm sure he's not taking candid pictures that require complete silence. He could use a P&S for that.

Yep, or I use my Telephoto ;)

BTW no offence taken!

I laughed. :D This sounded very SA. ;)

I also thought there is no such thing as a camera silencer, well, apparently you can get the styrofoam lunchbox for $800, and well, for that money you could get a PS camera of your choice that would make zero noise AND have a live preview screen AND it would be like one tenth of the size of the $800 lunchbox that actually looks like a $5 lunchbox, or a 1930 type 'tiny little spy camera'.
