they were taken locally while the traffic was stopped and then moving slowly along the main street of the town
in the first shot the girl is wearing the local school uniform
(which my daughter had worn when she went to that school also..same sort, not exactly that one though )http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
the shots were taken around the same time as the two girls in this url
(same hold up of traffic )
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=70713&goto=newpost (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=70713&goto=newpost)
all the arms are swinging in these alsohttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif
and the same lady caught up with the car as it was in a slow moving line

I agree I sharpened a little too much, especially on the middle shot
it seemed a bit 'funny 'while I was doing it (before sharpening)
and I was trying to make it better
thank you very much for saying
the girl's hand is moving in the first shot

I was going to ask if that first one is a school uniform, then I figured it would probably be smart to read your description first...
So, do all the women in Ireland walk with their right arm behind their back?   :D

Ok, cool. It just seemed to have that effect, because it has very sharp edges. Glad it was natural. Thanks for sharing those shots.

Interesting if not awesome shots.
However are there guidelines to say what is and isn't acceptable as a candid shot? As a parent I would not be over happy to find someone secretly photographing my child on her way to (or from) school. and then posting it on the world wide web. Adults are of course another matter but I think we should take care when possibly infringing the privacy of minors.

I don't think Marie crossed the line here. The first shot looks anonymous enough. Great capture Marie!

Can someone explain to me what makes these and other like them "great shots"?? It looks like random people just walking down the street to me, with nothing spectacular in the way of composition, framing, etc.
I mean no offense, Marie, but as a beginner, I just don't see what makes shots like this anything but pedestrian (ok, bad pun).

Cool shots Marie. Did you Lab Sharpen these or just apply the filter to the RGB photo? If its the latter, you should try lab sharpening to avoid affecting the colors in the picture.

no offence taken whatsoever txdude35
'great shots' is just an expression and it's very kind of people to say anything if they like a picture at all.
everything is taken with a pinch of salt , but appreciated
my reason for taking the shots
I guess it's just that we all are people and I love to take shots of them in a very casual way. everyday life kind of thing
also to show what's going on in this country
as we all love to see other countries ways, how things are different or how the people are represented
I try to get the best of them if I can.
sometimes funny sides or unusual things happen by accident
and the shots are more candid
but never taken with a lack of respect for anyone
thanks . no worries
I can understand.
it's all only fun
but it's not always as easy to get candid shots either
I love any of the shots I take of people (not in a wowy way )
but for me
and when I share them it's nice too........ that they are enjoyed, by people around here
thank you all

thanks Mike
what's lab sharpening ?
as far as I remember I just usm and sharpen ( ps elements)
and levels for settling the colour
the lady was rushing past
I think the car had started to move when she dropped into the picture  with the result I shook things (I think) when take off happened:lol:
in the first place I started by taking a shot of the gates from the car
and the girl walked past  as I was shooting the lovely painted entrance
and flowers .
( the company there always have the place kept beautiful )
the traffic delays are non stop and are causing people to get angry
no matter what we all feel there will always be traffic delays
there are new sets of traffic lights and crossings put along the town and onwards near the shopping centres and it is delaying things much more
but people are much much safer (especially with prams and babies ) when crossing the road
it's pointless getting mad or upsetting ourselves. go with the flo is best for our hearts..always
if we just can't do something about something , best to go with it
thanks again for the advice

Marie if you use Photoshop just open the photo,go to adustments and change mode from RGB to Lab Color. Now in the channels palette you'll find a "lightness' channel. Click on that channel and you'll see all the color removed from the photo. Apply Unsharp Mask as you normally would. After its nice and sharp go back to adjustments and change the mode back to RGB. Now you've sharpened the photo w/o affecting any of the colors and thereby introducing noise into the photo.

Can we assume, given shot 1, that the school is situated somewhere to the left of the image?
If so, it would appear that the woman in image 2 has most probably dropped her child off at school, and, is a mad rush to get to the sales (Image 3) with her husbands credit card before he gets home.

What makes these great shots? I will analyzie the first one
1) the rule of thirds is applied very well here, but beyond that you have
2) the angle that which the photo was taken. Low not your usually eye level,
3)the colors are fantastic
4)The young girl is the primary subject and stands out quite well, she also makes the viewer ask themselves, What is she looking at? Did she see a fellow classmate across the street? Is she going to school or coming home? All great photos will leave something to the imagination of the viewer. And
5)The green bollards lead and draw your eye deeper into the photo to see what is going on in the background, Yet the stone pillers and gates stop your eye and bring you back to the girl which is the main subject of the photo.
Well Done Marie, hope you don’t mind my detailed interepration of one of your photos

thank you very, very much Sandy
you give a wonderful description
I am honoured to read it
'down on the ground ' kind of honoured
(I mean humble)
thank you.
I was so afraid that those who did comment (like you and others)who had maybe said 'great ' (and I didn't read it back to find out )
that they would be offended by my reply saying that the comments were just an expression.
it's hard to try and justify some things and not hurt someone somewhere.
even just a wrong word and it goes all screwy, somewhere along the line
I appreciate yours and others thoughts on the pictures very very much always
we all do , everywhere on the forum.
it all makes us get better and enjoy it better
thank you again

No Marie it is I who am honored, I have gotten a lot from your photographic style. As I have from so many others on this forum. Yours is very unique and I enjoy it a lot. You certainly have a gift for looking at things and being able to capture it. Very reminescent to one of my favorite photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson, his whole style was based on capturing that desicive MOMENT and you do it well.

For me the camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity, the master of the instant which, in visual terms, questions and decides simultaneously. In order to “give a meaning” to the world, one has to feel involved in what one frames through the viewfinder. This attitude requires concentration, discipline of mind, sensitivity, and a sense of geometry. It is by economy of means that one arrives at simplicity of expression.
To take a photograph is to hold one’s breath when all faculties converge in a face of fleeing reality. It is at that moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.
To take a photograph means to recognize – simultaneously and within a fraction of a second– both the fact itself and the rigorous organisation of visually perceived forms that give it meaning.
It is putting one’s head, one’s eye, and one’s heart on the same axis

Thanks Sandy and Marie. I did like the lines in the first shot, but the other two had me a little baffled. I love to "people watch", but I guess I just haven't been able to make the leap successfully to capturing the moment with my camera.

Nice capture, Marie, I always contemplate the notion of sitting in a traffic jam and taking photos of other drivers and peole passing by. But since there is not much traffic in my part of the town and also I certainly don't want to cause some accidents (since most of time I am the driver),driving with my right hand, changing gear left, and so no extra hand some holding my camera, although it is always beside me. also I don't want other people to take note of my number plate and call the police. I would get polled over later.
hahaahaha, I will try tomorrow anyway, wait for my good news.
