Can any one tell me if a ring mount ($143.95) is necessary (and why) on a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens? I would like to purchase this lens but I find the cost of the ring absurd.

The lens is light enough that I would not consider the lens ring mount a requirement.

I've grown to love my tripod collar on my 70-200 - which I presume a "ring mount" to be. It allows vertical to horizontal repositioning with no effort nor re-aiming. I can see where that would be useful with a macro lens where you are in tight and where pivoting the camera on the tripod head would require repositioning of the whole mess.
The collar is too much money, but it'll be cheap if it gets you the image that you'd otherwise miss.

I'm not knocking tripod collars,. love 'em and use them anytime I have a heavy lens on a tripod or monopod. With the 70-200mm which weighs about three times what the 100mm macro does,. you have to use a colar,. really.
With the 100mm macro though it is purely optional. A great tool indeed... but optional. As I understand it,. one needs to buy TWO parts though for the 100mm macro?
The tripod collar and some sort of adapter to make the collar work with this smaller lens?
Can anyone clarify this?

If you have the tripod collar that comes with the 300/4 L IS lens - you need to get a part from Canon repair dept. (about $25.) that'll make that collar fit the 100 2.8 USM macro lens. Basically a sleeve that adapts the collar to the lesser diameter lens. Works fine. Every lens should have a rotating tripod collar (ok, those that might go onto a monopd or tripod sometimes.)

Hallelujah! Praise POTN Forums, POTN members, and apparently trivial threads like this one!
I just saved these $143.95 (and $30 or 40 more when shipped to France) in seconds of reading!
I have the same lens and problems when using a tripod, as the lens+body is not well balanced when screwed on the tripod head by the body bottom threading. But I was reluctant to even consider paying the absurd price Canon ask for this stupid piece of alloy.
Thanks to the above replies, I suddenly thought of using my Sigma's 70-200 f/2.8 tripod collar instead. I never had tried to dismount it, it comes off as easily as unscrewing the knob (clever, isn't it?)
Then I put it on the barrel of the 100 Macro and guess what? It fits perfectly. I do not mean "it will fit", I mean "it does fit" and as tight as it can. I do not even have enough room left to put some gaffer tape. Hallelujah bros'n'sisters!
Thanks to you, I just made nearly half my way to a 85mm f/1.8, wasn't it worth opening this thread?

According to what I can see from B&H, the Sigma spare part (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=335186&is=REG]Sigma) is not a cheapo either...
... although it may be more "universal" ?

Good news friends!!
I just got e-mail from Sigma Japan and they said the stock tripod collar is 4000 yen (about 40USD). the one Pierrot post the link is for "Sigma TS-41 "LONG" Platform Tripod Collar" and the one come with the lens originally is "not-long"..
The parts number is.. 0085126 566029 (they look different from the one B&H post as manufacture number but..) Sigma Japan said we should be able to special order this item from most of the Sigma dealers. I will try to get hold of this item and let you guys know how it goes..
again Pierrot, thanks for the great info!!

Hi.
Is the tripod mount ring for the 300/4 ring "B"? In looking at various dealer sites, it appears that the $143 ring "B" comes as two parts - the ring and an adapter. I'm wondering if the adapter that you purchased is the same that would modify ring "B" that comes with the 180/3.5 macro to use with the 100 macro.
