I am certain that they have these in the US as well...in fact across the globe by the looks of it. It's not (usually) anything that is electronic or battery powered. It's a modern toy, but appeals to the older persons around who used to have to "make their own" entertainment...;)
I shan't hold out much longer - it's not fair. Someone guessed toy and it is a toy...a few more guesses then I'll cave in. :D

Ok, here you go - it's actually K'nex. Model making stuff, though, so you were on target with Meccano and Lego.
My step-father made this "fairground Ride" which really worked - it lifted up the "rockets" as it spun! Like I said - grandparents like it more than the kids!

This thing is usually used outdoors, but generally remains indoors when not in use. Sometimes I have to leave it in the garage, especially if I don't want my wife to smack me around. :lol::lol:

The fresnel lens I took the photo of was from a plastic A4 sized lens that I'm experimenting with for a flash extender. And it's lots of fun with the sun, you can burn concrete with its concentrated beam! I know b/c I tried hehe

Sorry, but no. I wish it was, because I love both and that would have meant I got to have one more piece of bacon or jerky than I normally get, which isn't much as I am trying to watch my weight.
