No that's not it. When I first took the picture I was surprised at how it looked, so I inspected it under a microscope in my lab. It's really quite intricate. The picture is just a very small section of it.

STYROFOAM!

Technically it's not styrofoam, but you're close enough, so you're up Puppy.

It's the sort of foam that you might find in a cushion. This particular piece was used to separate stacks of microscope cover slips. It's completely open cell - very few (if any) bubbles at all, just an intricate framework polymer. Here's a bit more of it:

Yes, I know all about polystyrene - I'm a chemistry professor by day! :) . This stuff is not polystyrene, and it doesn't feel (to me) like polyurethane. Either way, it's very common - there's probably some in your seat cushions. I was surprised that it is completely open cell.

A ridge is a long, narrow piece of raised land, and I'm not sure how you can put a lock on that. But it doesn't have much to do with a lock. Although, the pictured portion of the mechanism does prevent a moving part from moving, for the purposes of storage when the mechanism is not in use. (I hope I haven't given away too much).

Not really... A latch is a type of mechanical fastener that is used to join two (or more) objects or surfaces together while allowing for the regular or eventual separation of the objects or surfaces.
And neither is it a picture frame. However, when not in use, there is a clear covering over it.

Usually it is not considered proper practice to fry such equipment. As for whether Dean would eat it, I'm not sure. When I Googled "eat a ______" with quotation marks where ______ is the name of this object, I got 4 results. Out of those 4 results, two of them had a full stop between "eat" and "a". So, I can assume that few people have thought of eating it.

It is an equipment found in many homes, including mine. Some artists use it, and some artists vehemently oppose using it. This mechanical device was invented in Amsterdam in 1812, and the particular piece I have at home is of the brand NIKKO (made in Japan, probably).
