I'm planning on allowing three quite different answers to this puzzle, because I have three objects with a mechanism that is essentially identical to the one shown in the picture. One of these may well be found in a kitchen, but it is not really a kitchen item.
Hope that's not too confusing. :D:D

It is made of shiny metal - maybe chrome-plated, but it could just be polished stainless.

We have a winner!
The one shown has a magnet on the end, so it's a tool for picking up dropped nuts and bolts etc. The mechanism is pretty much identical to a radio aerial. I also use one as a pointer when lecturing at work, and I have one with a little claw on the end for use as a backscratcher.
Anyhow, the gentleman with the restless legs - you're up.

No, it's electrical.
Maybe I should clarify an earlier post. I would consider a "light fitting" to be the lamp socket or even the whole lamp itself, not just the bit that gives off light ...

It's pretty amazing how many things can look metallic when viewed as macros -- I mean, not only the metallic base there but the bulb itself gives off a metallic appearance!

I guess a lot of that has to do with the lighting - I used a gooseneck fibre optic from one of my microscopes at work. That particular one is uni-directional, and was tough to get in a good position. Surprisingly, the fibre-optic ring light gave worse lighting.

Is there any reason why I can't see an image from Restless Legs Man? I notice this when I'm at work - some images don't show (I get the rectangle with the red cross) and others do! Are people posting in different ways?
I know my laptop at school (I'm a teacher, not a kid) is severely locked down - so many things I'm not big enough to look at/play with (!)). But it seems strange that I can see some, but not others.
