View Full Version : Would you buy a 1.3x prosumer camera?

There have been persistent rumors that Canon is going to make a 1.3x prosumer camera - essentially a D300 equivalent but with a 1.3x sensor.
Would you buy this camera or do you prefer 1.6x and FF?

70-200 handles waaaaay better on a 1.3 for me than it does for a 1.6, as do a bunch of other lenses... I'd definitely go for it.

why not? it's just a variation of sensor size. not really that intriguing. EF-S will continue to stay w/ xxxD

I think there are too many good APS-C sized lenses out for that to be worthwhile. You be essentially "stuck" with L lenses at wide angle. Not that that is terrible, it just gets pricey.

I think sticking with 1.6x gives some clear advantages, like the ability for more fps, wider AF spread and more "reach". Plus, it is obvious that a 1.3x camera will cost more to make.

It is possible that Canon will do something like "compatibility mode" for EF-S lenses, as Nikon has in D700. It may be a mode with less pixels recorded like Nikon, or Canon may invent something better so resolution will not be sacrificed. In fact, it is clearly easier to make "compatibility mode" for APS-H sensor than for APS, so we may see something like that, if rumor about APS-H in 60D is true. On the other hand, if EF-S lenses would not be usable on new body, it will not be good at all for many of us.

Very good idea. And if the new sensor is 15MP or so, then who cares about having to crop down to 12MP for 1.6x mode. That is still plenty of detail.

Love the 1.3 crop on my MKIII with my lens line up much more than when I had a FF. Not interested in 1.6 crop.

i don't know enough on the subject to say.

why would a 1.3 crop not handler the efs lenses?

For the same reasons that FF will not handle the EF-S lenses.

1.3x is the red-headed stepchild of the Canon lineup. FF or 1.6x, thanks.

if it comes with a much improved AF system yes ...

Instead of another little bell and wistle I wish they would go 1.3 on the upcoming 60D. THAT would make a worthwhile upgrade provided they did everything else right.

I don't know if I would go for it. Many people who have two cameras go with a FF/1.6 combo. Then again, higher ISO that comes from a 1.3X crop would be nice.

One thing about 1.3x crop...if its anything like the current 1d series then they do not take EFS lenses and canon has reported numerous times they want to expand the line up for more prosumer, cheap, quality lenses through the EFS line

Why?

No, because my EF-S lenses wouldn't work. I'd rather just go for the real 1.3x camera - the 1D - if that were the case.

Why?

thinner DoF. I can't put my finger on it but when you put a lens on a 1.3 crop or better, a FF... the pics look mazin'

Kind-of hooked on full frame. I don't dislike the 1.3X, but I don't see enough of a benefit.

I wouldn't do it just for the sake of the lenses I have.

I have put a lot of thought into my lens lineup, including ones on my shopping list that are going to be purchased by the end of the year. Because the APS-C format is getting so good, and the fact that I don't truly have a need for FF, I've decided on making my next camera purchase another APS-C model.

I wouldn't be able to use anything wider than 50mm if I made the switch to FF/APS-H.

I don't care if the crop is 1.6, 1.3, or FF, I would love to see a true pro-sumer body. The xxDs are nice, but they are just xxxD in a bigger shell with a few bells and whistles thrown in. They are not pro-sumer body's but enthusiast bodies. I want to see a 1D type camera in a xxD shell. 1d feature set, AF, metering, speed just in a smaller format. Canon is really missing out on a market segment here.
