Hi All,

I currently own a EOS 5 with a Canon Ultrasonic 28-105 / 1:3.5 - 4.5 and
Canon Ultrasonic 75-300 / 1:4 - 5.6 IS (Image Stabilizer). I also own "simple" digital camera (Olypmus).

There is currently a good offer for a 300D Body and I wonder if it's woth switching from the EOS 5 to the 300D. As I don't have yet epxerience with SLR Digital I don't really know if it's worth it or not to go for the 300D.

I'm not a "pro" photographer but I must admint I am not too happy with the small Olympus which is ok for "quick and dirty" pictures, but when I want to do more I go back to my EOS 5. The only drawback is that you have to wait long to get your pciture (not mentioning paying for the one you would just throw away...)

So...should I switch to 300D or stick to EOS %...? Thanks in advance for your advices.

Michael

As you said, the P&S (olympus) is only good for "quick and dirty" pictures.

now it is up to you, do you want your good photos to be digital or not?
If yes, than the 300D is a good start, but for a bit more, you can buy a 350D, witch is better

If you can get a 300D for a great price - I would go for it. The minor advantages - to me- of the 350XT are soon a wash if the price of the 300D is significantly lower. The 300D is also better to hold - much more of a grip.

I also think that you will enjoy digital SLR photography. I have no patience for film processing any longer or paying for improperly exposed shots! Which with me, are many! :-)

I believe the EOS 5 is the equivelent of the the A2, you will definitely notice a decrease in quality body wise from the 5, that is one of the reasons I, coming from an EOS 3, bought a 10D. The body just felt better, and had the heft I expected from a camera. I also wanted a fully functioning machine, and would have missed the ability to use AI Servo when I wanted.
This being said, you will notice a big difference stepping up from a P&S to the Drebel. If you can live with the firmware limitations of the Drebel then some bargains can be had now. The image quality of the Drebel is excellent, the picture quality is as good as the 10D, if you can accept the lighweight body and the firmware limitations, it is a fine camera body, that will work with your current EF lenses.
Wasia has a firmware hack that will restore full function to the Drebel also, making it nearly the equivalent of the 10D.

Yes - don't live with the restricted firmware if you get a 300D - just get the newest Waisa hack an install it right away!

You'd better try out the 300D first. Coming from an EOS-3 the first thing which was like a slap in the face was the miniscule viewfinder, like looking at a postage stamp at the end of a tunnel :p Overall, the EOS-5 is pretty responsive and faster to use than the 300D, you will need to see if you can live with this limitation. I can't, so I still shoot with my 3, and use a P&S for travel.

I had the simular experience going from my EOS30, and using a 300D. I am not sure how the 5 and 30 compare, feature wise they are close, build quality I am unsure.
