I've searched and searched on here and cannot find the link to the wasia firmware hack for the Drebel. I need to put it back in to change a setting so I can put the Canon firmware back in so I can send it in for service. Can someone please reply with the link?

Thanks in advance.

Yes I did, but that doesn't include the most common link I've seen for it. And I now see there is a link to it, but only posted in a format that I do not have a program to use it with. There is a much more popular link to the hack then this one: http://satinfo.narod.ru/en/download.html

No I can't, those files are basically unheard of in the USA.

just use winrar

http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar342.exe

its trial, but it keeps working after the 30 days :D
just (after installing) Rightclick the RAR file, and unrar to...

I'd rather not deal with a program I only would use once. Thanks though.

you can remove it afterwards

it can be trusted, i use it for years on several PC's with no problems at all
it can also unzip, make zip en rar files and even create a self-extracting archive (exe file), which can be unpacked without using any other programs.

and if you still dont want to use the program, I have downloaded it and made a self-extracting archive from it (just download, open it and click 'install' witch will create the map with the files)

This site has a .zip of it:

There's an updated firmware with more features here (I haven't tried it):

All you need is the Waisa file - then do what I did. Download the Canon version of the firmware from the Canon USA site and it INCLUDES a utility program that walks you through the firmware installation. Just go into the folder that is created when you download the Canon firmware and replace the Canon rar file with the Waisa rar file and you let Canon's own utility load the hacked firmware for you! Could not be any easier - no need whatsoever for third party rar programs....why bother?

Not entirely accurate there

Anyway, winrar is a much better alternative to winzip. I doubt you'd only use it once.

But you can send someone a ZIP file and 99% of the time they will be able to unzip it. Zip files have been around since Pkzip - from DOS if you're been around computers that long. lol

If what you want to do is put the firmware back to Canon original, to send in for service, then you don't need to do anything with the hacked version.

go here: http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/eosdigital/E3kr_firmware-e.html and follow the instructions on the canon website. They're very clear.

good luck, and make sure you have a fully charged battery before doing anything.

Can someone tell me why you would need Winrar or any other program when you could just use the process that I describe above to install or uninstall the hack? I'm kind of at a loss as to why anyone would need Winrar?

It appears to be used 'on the edge' alot of grey stuff, and the not so grey. Many cracks and keys are often RAR'd, I often see people use it to circumvent email scanners, they mainly only deal with ZIP.

I have had the odd 'legitmate' file RAR'd, usually patches or updates for some obscure software (usually out of Europe), not main stream at all.

RAR is a standard packaging used with UNIX and mac.

I still don't understand WHY you would need a rar utility to install or uninstall the hacked firmware.......not sure why that is even being discussed.

The hacked firmware is compressed using RAR.

Ok - thanks Peter - that answered my question. However, I would still recommend the method for installing firmware that I mentioned above - seem to be an easy way to go without needing any other software really. Just let Canon's own firmware installer do all the work!
