You know when your at the track taking panning shots and all of a sudden theres cars crashing all around you and your left trying to capture the action at an 125th or lower.

Well I think I have just worked out that you can sort it out with a 1Dmk3 and probably other bodys. I havent tried it out in anger yet so I could still be wrong.

Here is my therory-:

C Fn IV set 2- this gives back button focusing
then set up for action, 1250th, AI focus etc + any other C Fn that you would normally use
Next goto C Fn 1- 14 and register these settings as AE lock AF on
Now set your camera for panning, 125th etc

So what this seems to give me is -:

Panning on AF-On Button

Action on AE(*) button

Does anyone else use this setup or have I just got it wrong ?

Please let me know how you get on, the weather here is not great so I don't think I will get out to try it.

it worked well, for me to have these functions enabled while at times it was clumsy, i think that may have been my fingers though
it was also very useful especially when you want to get three quarter and head on shot's and then do a pan.

it was good to have an option which was the press of a button away instead of a turn of a dial and a few buttons.

I also went out yesterday and found it very usefull function to have. I will be continuing to use this as my chosen way to shoot motor sports and probabley wild life.

Nice setup - I need to have a play outside but if you set C Fn IV 2 to disable then you've got pan settings and AF with the AF-ON button and 'speed' settings and AF with the AE_ON button :)

Just watch me press the wrong one in the heat of battle! ;)
