This past Wednesday I hiked to the summit of Turtlehead Peak from the old Sandstone Quarry in Red Rock Canyon. Here are a few shots from that trek. All of the pictures were taken with my Olympus C-8080WZ.

From just past the sandstone hills, looking up at Turtlehead Peak:

At the saddle just below the summit I turned around to look down the route I had just climbed:

The view northeast from the summit, looking toward the Strip. I was able to identify several of the resort casinos/hotels from here:

At the saddle again as I head back down:

I also created a pano of the view of the canyon from the summit, but it's kind of big so I'll just post the link instead of embedding it: http://www.ldphotography.net/cdpf/rrcthppano.jpg

Where's the Montecito?

My Olympus can't zoom in quite that far...

Nice skies, except over the city.

I'll bet the view is much better after a good rain or when it's windy and blows the smog away.

Really loved the pano.

Thanks. I was hoping everyone wouldn't overlook the link to the pano at the bottom. ;)

Me too. I'm so used to seeing links at the bottom of peoples posts that I tend to overlook them when I'm in a hurry. Your pano was well worth the time to look. :D

I realize I'm bumping an INCREDIBLY old thread here... but...

How long did this hike take you? I am headed out to Vegas in less than two weeks and will be near the Canyon for some of my stay.

I've been to the top of Turtlehead three times. My first time was Christmas Eve 2003 (http://www.ldphotography.net/eeHikes/list.php?exhibition=97&ee_lang=eng). It took me almost exactly two hours to get to the top (I took a wrong turn on the way and wasted some time backtracking), and about an hour and a half to get back down.

My second climb was on May 4, 2005 (http://www.ldphotography.net/eeHikes/list.php?exhibition=126&ee_lang=eng), when I took the pictures I started this thread with. I have no idea on the times for that hike because it looks like I forgot to copy the EXIF data from the originals to the edited files. I'd have to hunt for the original RAWs in my backups, but it's late and I don't feel like doing that right now...

My third climb was on November 7, 2006 (http://www.ldphotography.net/eeHikes/list.php?exhibition=139&ee_lang=eng). Again it took me about two hours, though I didn't get sidetracked that time. I was just moving a little slower. That time I made it back down in about an hour and twenty minutes.

It starts to really warm up in the desert around mid-to-late May. Start early and take plenty of water with you.

Thanks thomas... It sounds like that will be a little more involved then I will have time for.

Any recommendations for good places to shoot that aren't far off the beaten path... meaning driving distance?

Funny that this is in the "Wildlife" section. Did there used to not be a wildlife section - is that why it's popping up here?

There are a few other, shorter trails in Red Rock Canyon that are pretty nice. Also, if 50+ miles isn't too far for you, check out Valley of Fire. That's my favorite state park. Take the 15 north to exit 75 and follow the signs.

When I originally started this thread there was one share forum. All pics were posted in it. When things got split up into a gazillion different forums, some of the older threads were never moved into the appropriate places.

Edit: No, wait... There were a few share forums here in 2005. This one used to be called Nature and Wildlife. That's why this was posted in here. When Nature was split off as it's own forum, this thread wasn't moved with it.
