Is the world coming to an end?

Its in the current issue. It beat Nikon, and everyone else, in AF, resolution, color accuracy and ISO performance.

SWEET!!!!!

Moral of this story -- turns out that the 50D makes for one awesome Rebel!!!

...better than which Nikon? The D5000? I believe that. The results are great with the mini-Nikon, but the user experience leaves a bit to be desired.

Yep. The D5000.

Isn't this an example of how not to start a thread? First which Nikon? Second, a link would be useful! Third, which Canon? Fourth, Rebel? WTF is that? Do you actually mean 50D or something else? if so, over here the best price for a 50D is £809 and the D5000 £543. Maybe I'm missing something here, but that seems a dumb comparison!

You really don't know what a Rebel is?

They don't brand the entry-level DSLRs with the "Rebel" badge in Europe. It's just the "Canon 500D".

The strange part about the comparison is that DXOmark.com tested the D5000 and 500D and the D5000 actually showed more accurate color response and a higher SNR. Then again, popphoto likes to test JPEG results too, so......

Indeed they don't. They don't use the term "xxxD" in the US either, but I know what it means.:) I wonder what they call the 500D in Africa......;)

I know this post was obtuse -- one of the drawbacks on posting from the iPhone (also known as the iPhone in Eurpoe :) ). I just got a little excited when I saw that the PopPhoto folks, who have been fawning of late over Nikon and their offerings, actually wrote that they really liked a Canon camera when compared to the Nikon eqivalent.

You really don't know what a Rebel is?We do. You don't. The 50D, which you referenced in your first post, ain't a Rebel. The Rebel series is the 350-400-450 series. I think you mean the Canon Ti1 versus the Nikon D5000, which is the only match-up that makes any sense at all

You don't know the half of it. You should have seen me when I discovered rechargeable batteries!

For the purposes of this response, I will assume at the least that you didn't read the reviews of the 50D and 500D. At the most, I will assume we interpreted them differently.

The PopPhoto article on the 500D (lets avoid THAT confusion) points out that the traits that trickled down from the 50D make it a superior entry level DSLR. When they reviewed those features in the 50D (Specifically the LCD, AF system speed, resolution, and noise) that were lukewarm on them.

So the point I was trying to make (admittedly only apparent to those who read the magazine) was that the feature set from the 50D was acclaimed when it appeared in the Rebel, an opposite reaction to that when those features appeared in the 50D.

Make sense now? Probably not.
