A halo is a ring or border of brightness that forms around an object that extends into a unifornly colored area such as a tree stretching out into the sky. You want to avoid halos so that they don't take away from an image.
Halos are usually formed due to too much strength being worked into the picture. The "Highlights Smoothing" slider in Photomatix alllows for some control over the amount of haloing occurring and raising this slider allows for raising the "Strength" slider even more.
