i wondered if any one can help i have just brought a canon 20 d ( an upgrade from my 300d) and have started playing with it on both the manual and auto settings the built in flash works fine on both settings. The problem is with my horse shoe mounted flash a jessops 280afc canon ttl dedicated flash. On auto it fires and the image is fine but on manual it fires but the image is to dark to see any thing even if i have it on the same settings as when it worked in auto mode. I have tryed different settings for the shutter speed and different appatures no help. even the little symbol for the flash doesnt show up in manuel mode.
Has any one any more ideas what i could try the flash works fine on the 300d both in auto and manual. Even having the same settings on both cameras no joy .
I tried a diffferent flash gun (again no joy...)
help me please or would i need a new flash to work better with it .

lol, I think it's a hot shot on top of your camera, not a horse shoe! Welcome to POTN :)
Can't help with that problem sorry, i've only ever used the flashes Canon recommends, the EX series.

Check to see that your flash will work in ETTL mode. If it is only TTL then you will have these problems. Other than that, get a 580ex. Better yet, borrow one from a camera shop and see if that solves the problem

I'm pretty sure it's a hot shoe, and i'm almost certain it's not a horse shoe on top of your camera!

"jessops 280afc canon ttl dedicated flash"
Maybe there is some Brit that knows about this unit.
"TTL" is the type of flash that was common back in the film days, and we don't see too many of them now. In some very basic modes of operation, some of them will work with a 20D, and in other modes, they will not work at all. Some Canon -EZ units are the same way.
For your new camera, I would consider the purchase of something that is fully compatible, such as Canon 420EX, 550EX, or 580EX.

It's probably just the limits of the flash on a digital camera showing up... this past Halloween before I had gotten my Sigma DG 500 Super, I borrowed an old Vivitar flash a friend of mine used on his Rebel (film). It did the exact same thing, sometimes the flash would work fine, others the pictures would end up dark....
Got the Sigma flash, and haven't had problems.
