Can anyone tell me something about using the auxiliary High-Power Flash HF-DC1?

Hadn't noticed this accessory advertised until today on the Canon site. There was no description of it and/or it's uses. Just the price. And it took me a long time to find that much.

When and why would it be neccessary or useful?

How does it work in conjuction with the built-in flash.

Must it be mounted on the camera to fire?

Whatever you can tell me would be appreciated.

Here's some information you may find useful:

The flash detects the preflash of the onboard flash to synch properly with the camera's flash, so there are no cables. The HF-DC1 can either attach onto the camera (there's a bracket that screws into the tripod mount) or be placed in line of sight of the camera's flash and be used as a slave. The flash range is approximately twice the working range of the onboard flash. There are 3 different power levels that you can manually select. It has 2 modes - automatic and manual mode. The manual mode is for use when shooting in an area with other cameras. You can also simultaneously use multiple HF-DC1 flashes if desired (for more illumination or just different lighting).
