Ok, before you go tell me to read the manual, I cant find it. I also spent hours looking for a downloadable on on canon's site. No joy.
Is it possible to set the 580 as a optical slave and have it fire when the on camera flash goes off?

I don't think so, I think you have to have a 550 or 580 as the master, or one of those other deals that I can't remember the name of right now. However, if I'm wrong, then I would also be interested in know how to do that.

I don't think the 580 can act as an optical slave, you'll need the transmitter, or another external flash on your camera.

Everyone is correct on this. No you can't make ANY EX canon series (older might fall under this) to pop when it see a flash of light. Only way it will pop is with another flash head (Canon/Sigma) or the Canon ST-E2
Forgot to mention a slave optic unit that goes on the hot shoe area.

Can do this with the Sigma 500 Super. But getting the exposure right is tricky.
