In a previous thread, someone mentioned that L glass acted liked like a flame to the moths! My better half and I were visiting the National Zoo, and I got to try out my new 70-200 f2.8 with the TC 1.4. I got several envious looks (mostly from n*k*n owners).

One adventurous fellow, even asked me if I was using an 800mm lens!

I definately had a great time.

Here's a sample

I've had "hey that's quite a lens" comments about the 17-40. I think people are getting more an more used to micro P&S cameras so anything with a decent lens on it becomes notable.

I have to laugh when someone says "nice camera" when they see one of the big white lenses. The 20D does not receive such praise when adorned with a more diminutive apendage ...

Size matters, I guess. :(
And color ... I thought we had moved beyond such prejudices. ;)

Using my 20d and 24-70 'L', I had the 4th grade girls at my daughters soccer game suddenly group together and smile nervously at the end of the soccer game. Didn't know why until one of them ask me. They thought I was the local newspaper's photographer.

:D that's great ! 800mm, well, you weren't that far away.... 200mm*1.4*1.6 = 448 .... almost there :-P

Funny, I feel kind of self concious with that big lens, and would rather be more inconspicuous at my kid's games. That's one of the reasons I go hand held rather than adding a monopod or tripod to the mix as well.

Guess I just need to work through it-----or my kid's do.

Funny you mention this. I hadn't really thought about it, but I typically use my 70-200 to photograph 5th grade girls basketball. After a tournament game, the opposing team wanted a picture. They thought I worked for the local paper.

Funny things happen

While fooling around snapping shots at the local park/beach some ladies said to me "wow that's a big lens"

I did manage a quick "ah,but it's not what you have-it's how you use it"
but then i got all shy and had to leave

darn,i need to think better
