i see alot of you have ball heads and all kinds of different heads for monopods
are they really that helpful?

is it easier to pan with a ball head? are they worth it..im really on a tight budget..what would be a cheap monopod and perhaps a monopod with ballhead combo?

brand really doesnt matter to me..as long as its decent and cheap..(pricewise)

check out the Manfrotto at B&H they have setup with different heads. Or was it Adorama. Anyway Adorama has a House brand Monopod that is a copy of an old Linhof monopod. Check it out.

I personally don't use a ball head on a monopod. Just a tilt head.

I still prefer a ball head. I've seen too many ways to use a monopod that don't involve putting it on the ground directly beneath the camera. A tilt head would be my next choice, though.

would you guys then at least suggest a tilt head with a monopod? that is what i am gathering here i guess..

what system are you currently using on your tripod? You'll probably want to stick with that same manufacture, so you can switch to either one on the fly without changing plates.

haha i wouldnt call it a system its a cheapo velbon or something like that from target..

I have that monopod and I find it to be excellent! With it, I haven't missed a shot that I wanted yet.

I just got this Manfrotto 684B for only $100 that I'm really happy with so far, but I haven't had the need for any kind of head on it yet. I have the 322RC2 grip ballhead, but that just seems like a waste because all you really might ever need is to be able to tilt up and down more, so a tilt head seems more appropriate for sure.

The cool part about the 684B is that it doesn't use any clamps. Just hold the bottom leg and pull to expand, and squeeze the trigger on the handle to collapse. Supports 18lbs too. I've used it with the Sigma 500mm and it was no problem.

Is the 684B truelly secure? I mean it won't collaspe suddenly. I don't want to push hard to stablize to find me down on the ground. Did you consider the imitation Linhof monopod by Adorama. I saw it went my BroInlaw pick it up. It felt cheap.

The 648B is very nice.. I still use that one a lot :)
It won't collapse.
the speed of adjustment with the squeze grip can come in very handy.

I use the following:
Manfrotto 680 Compact Monopod
Manfrotto 482 Micro Ball Head

It easily supports my 1D MKII and 70-200 f/2.8 IS L lens. I leave the ballhead loose, using the tripod to support the weight.

I saw a monopod with a "3-D" head. What exactly is that?

I think it pans (side to side) tilts (up and down) and portrait.

Ok thanks. :) That sounds like a nice mix between a ball head and a tilt head.

I have the Manfrotto 681B Monopod with the 486RC2 head. I got the idea to use a ball head after reading this article:

http://www.outdooreyes.com/photo5.php3

I find that this makes the camera really stable!
