NYC: USTA US Open Tennis Practice Day

Just thought I'll put this out there since I am probably going. I've gone the last 2 years and it's a great way to see the Tennis Stars up close and personal and also get your sports shooting thang on!

When: August 30th, 2009. Gates open 11am. Free. (Paid Parking however...)
Where: USTA National Tennis Center by Flushing Meandows Corona Park in Queens, NY.

Going to try to get there first thing. Maybe around 10:30-10:45am. It gets pretty crowded in there, especially around the more famous players.

Of particular interest would be the bag size allowance. Single Compartment. 12" x 12" x 16" dimension.

Last year, I brought the 300L f4 IS I used to own. This year I will go with my 200L f2 IS and my tele converters. That's more than long enough since you really do get pretty close to the action!

They do a bag check when entering. Last year I went with my SlingShot 200 (might have been my Domke shoulder bag...I am not sure) and I didn't have a problem. I believe a monopod is also allowed, but I am not 100% sure.

Though a telephoto lens like the 70-200 is definitely a good idea, you'd be able to get really close to the action on at least some of the areas, so you may be able to get some nice shots regardless.

It really depends. Usually folks gravitate towards the more famous players so some of the lesser known players are VERY accessible as far as getting a good location to shoot, etc.

If Nadal is playing, forget that. Last year it was CRAZY. Others like James Blake, not so crazy. Same with female players other than the Williams sisters. In fact I've gone to the practice day twice and never saw the sisters there. I saw Agassi before he retired, Nadal before/after he was famous. (Before = you could walk up to him and get autographs, etc...After = security detail)

It's really a fun event since I enjoy watching tennis.

As I mentioned before, great opportunity to get your sports shooting on!

Again, it depends. I think you'll be able to get close to some of the lesser know players. Some of the players are literally right there. You are basically standing on the side lines, so to speak.

Other players like to practice away from the crowds.

Other players practice in the stadiums and while you can generally get front row seats, you are still further away than you would be on the regular courts on the ground.

Again, YMMV...

Just to give you an idea, this was taken with a 300L f4 IS + 1.4x TC. I was directly across the court from him...which means I was maybe 10 feet beyond the lines if you consider the little space between the court and the short fence they have.

So as far as what you can get with your lens, use your imagination...probably fully body shots, etc...
Beside, you'd be able to get some candids of the visitors, and all kinds of other interesing things which I didn't get to shoot b/c I was there with my wife who wanted to get the heck out of there after 2 hours...

I'm now off to court to battle a traffic ticket ($850 & 5pts) with a little corruption. Economy FAIL.

I had to pay $50 (should've been $85 + $35 surcharge) last week for a ticket I got on a freaking bicycle (no open containers :D) for wearing two earphones.

It's free (parking cost $10-$15 I think), you can bring your wanna-be gear without the security guards thinking you have a bazooka, and best of all, you get close to the action. These are world class athletes folks. If that ain't good enough for you...then perhaps you can stroll on to near-by Flushing Meadows Corona Park and shoot some ducks. Or maybe hang around the street corner harassing women who think they look good, and go for a impromptu strobist "model" shoot?

Well, another super successful meet. Three of us, which I feel is just about a perfect number. Easily manageable. I'm uploading my pics now. Shot somewhere in the vicinity of 800 or so. Able to get super close to professional stars. A once in a lifetime opportunity to be in the first row, for free, and bring in any camera gear you want, including video. No limitations.

As to the rest of you who didn't show, while I usually beat around the bush, kindly allow me to be blunt this time around, you bunch of losers.

Well put MDJAK...I was once again able to be a freeloader. Free ride. Free drinks. The only thing that he didn't share was his sun tan lotion he bought at the venue...probably got ripped off. But as he so succinctly puts it, he's got money coming out of his a-hole so no harm done what with the $40 T-Shirts he was snatching up like they were Nikon lenses...

He also got to meet his favorite Tennis Player, John McEnroe. That was actually pretty cool I have to admit. Never expected him to be playing.

I told you it's a pretty unique opportunity to meet the stars up close and personal.

Sure, it doesn't beat stalking wanna be "models" on the street for some alley way shooting. Oh wait...yes it does.
