I searched other threads for this answer....I hope it is not too stupid of a question, but I read the manuals and didn't figure it out so....

I have a pretty new 40D and a 580EX II, which works fine until I attatch it with a brand new off-camera shoe cord (OC-E3). I tried changing the camera flash settings in the menu and it says it doesn't recognize any flash atached. I have the flash in ETTL mode and it doesn't recognize anything the camera does.

Any ideas? I am thinking of just taking it back to the camera store I purchased it from and asking them to show me how to use it (embarassing:o)

Thanks for any imput, I appreciate your time!

Julie

You might have a bad cord. Taking it back to the store is a good idea. They will be able to test it on another camera.

Is the flash inserted into the cord backwards? (Don't laugh. I've done it.) Is the cord backwards on the camera? (No, I haven't.) Are both ends inserted into the hot shoes as far as they will go? (Yes, I have.) Those are the easy ones I can think of.

As Jim says, first check the connection....it's not uncommon to have it wrong or just not fully seated.
If that's not the problem, it's also not uncommon for these cords to be faulty as Mike mentioned. You might try exchanging to cord, and let this be a lesson...have a back-up cord(s) if you are on a shoot where it's a necessity.

thanks guys...I asked a friend at work to look at it and he just reset my camera settings and it worked right away....oops:) guess it is like rebooting a computer--I just assumed it was the cord!

I had the same problem too where my 5D wouldn't fire my 580EX and 580EX II while using the OC-E3. After wiggling(sp?) it then it worked fine.
