I am getting started with some studio shots. (for myself and friends) hobby only at this time. Well I got my background up and a convertable umbrella and stand w/ 430ex. Here are 2 shots I was pretty happy with. These were with an Xti and my new nifty fifty. I am open to critque and do not take offense, how else will I learn?

On a side note I have to give all you photographers that take photos of children ALOT of credit!!! I'm sure it's a little easier with an assistant, but a 2 year old does NOT want to stay still. I took these by myself and found myself setting him up and flopping down into a prone position and snapping the pic as fast as I could before he'd move. (as a result I ended up with alot of pics with soft focus, but it was fun.

I think without the mirror would have been a better choice if they were mine. You got him just lovely, but the reflection shows blur? I notice that for most of the child photography, they use an opaque flooring.

I did notice the mirror double imaging. I found that the angle of the mirror causes this. I produced some better shots ( mirror wise) by raising the camera higher changing the angle. But of course when my son wasn't cooperating. I have some more I took later that night that are still in the camera. I haven't had a chance to look at them yet. As for the background I was trying to blacked out look.

I love the first shot. I think the DOF and lighting are perfect. The only issue I see is you need to clean up the left side where the mirror meets the background. This might actually work better with a shiny surface other than a mirror. At this angle you are getting the double image because of the reflection off of both the front of the glass and the silver backing.

I've read that some people use plexi-glass as a precaution for possible breakage. Maybe I'll try that. Here's another shot I took later in the day after realizing the double image in the mirror. It's better by my son but you can still see it by the truck.
