Anyone have this or the ranger version and can speak to its quality? I have no reason to suspect otherwise, but i don't want to plop down that much cash for a subpar case that i can get with Pelican instead (Though it won't have the pefect formed foam).

Looks like a nice case. I have no experience with it but I do question the strength and durability when you compare price to a comparable Pelican case. The cutouts are nice but we all know that anything that is padded and holds the gear firmly will work well so I'm not sure that the proprietary foam cutouts are all that important or necessary.

If you have a store or a way to check out the case I would try to do a visual comparison between that case and a Pelican which could be customized and perhaps might work out even better in terms or accessories and doo-dads.

I can't speak to this one....but I know the one included with rangers are NOT impressive and are usually set aside in the corner/back of the closet.

I'd go pelican with foam dividers ANY day.

which/how many lights are you hoping to carry?

Once you start getting into the price range of the Pelican cases you really should look at the Lightware bags. I have a pair of these and will say that they are very well constructed.

That case came with my original elinchrom el500 set...and a similar one with my ranger....It's horrible...it's like a lunchbox with some foam superglued...sometimes I don't know what elinchrom is thinking. I've seen people use them before but personally would never trust it. Pelican is really nice for a location photographer that has to contend with adverse weather....I prefer softcases (like lightware or tenba) for shooting indoor locations because they are kinder on furniture, walls and flooring. One more thing to think about is the footprint that a case will leave while sitting on the floor unattended. Certain cases are more prone to tripping people...I usually like the tall deep cases because they tuck nicely against walls and don't usually trip people on locations like the shallow wide cases. Hope that makes sense...good luck with whatever you decide

I suppose it would depend on how the case was being packed, how it was being transported, who was moving it, the environment(s) you go to, weather conditions, etc.

Soft bags are great for certain things but depending on circumstances they can absolutely be the wrong choice.

All depends what you need it for. If you just want something to stop your lights getting damaged during a car/truck journey to a shoot location where they'll be immediately unpacked then the Elinchrom case is ideal. If you need something more versatile and robust then it probably won't be for you.

Great, thx guys! Exactly what i feared... Great lights and modifiers, horrible cases.

I already use two pelicans. Getting one more won't kill us. :) We had one with the cubed cutout foam, well that's all been torn apart by now. Which is why the contoured foam of the Elinchrom case was so attractive. Oh well, Pelican #3 it is.

Oh, i'm carrying 3 RX600's. I've been carrying them on the stands and that is problematic at best.

The cases aren't horrible - I use them on occasion and they work well for protection. They're just not very versatile for storing other things and they take up a lot of space for just 3 heads.

Thanks. I forgot to look up where we got our previous pelicans and the 1560 will probably fit the bill and cost less. I'm going to verify when i get home.

Seems like B&H has just as good, if not better prices on pelican.

If you haven't done so already, I highly recommend the $100/year NAPP membership that'll give you free shipping at B&H.

No Pelican case thats for sure, its an ok case, but not comparable to pelican cases.

It's not even close! I have two of these Elinchrom cases (supplied with different Elinchrom kits that I have bought), and while OK for transporting the gear and protecting it reasonably well, I would not have anywhere near the faith in them that I do in my Pelican cases (in which my gear now lives). The mechanics of these case also do not inspire any confidence - the latches are unreliable at best, and the hinges are nowhere near as bulletproof as on the Pelicans. The Elinchrom case is OK for light-duty protection while the lights are in your care, but I would never, ever consider checking one on a plane! It's also not very practical, since it has to be carried everywhere. You can buy Pelican cases with wheels (as I get older, I appreciate things like this a lot more :)).

Personally, I wouldn't spend my money on the Elinchrom case. Think about this: Why did I buy Pelican cases, when I already had two of these Elinchrom cases supplied to me, "free" of charge?

In case anyone was wondering, i went with the pelican 1630. I'll post pics once i have the lights and foam properly cut out. This is a little bigger than for just 3 lights, i'm hoping to fit skyport case and wires and maybe even some reflectors in here.
