Here's a few fun shots. The quality of them isn't so great. My Sigma 70-300mm doesn't like being at 300mm.

These shots were done yesterday

A6-EMM 777-31H touching down on 23R at NZAA

A340-200 Aerolineas Argentinas on 23R

Brand new Emirates 777-36N/ER

http://wazz*****scity.com/20d/close4.jpg
777-36NR/ER again.

And for my typical shots, I uploaded a couple more full size images...

Forgot to mention the 2nd shot. Look at how HUGE the wheels are, in comparison to the plastic construction walls in the background. They're also used at normal roadworks, and probably stand 1metre tall each.

Superb shots Wazza. You caught a vortex above the wing in that first shot :-)

Those are some very good shots. My Canon 75-300mm IS does not like to be 300 mm either, but I still try to get the shot any way. Did you pan to get the shots? Can post some exif info?
Thanks

Great shots - I enjoy getting up-close with the jets, as long as I can do it from the comfort of my office chair. :)

1st: 1/250th, f8, iso 200, 168mm, +0.3 compensation

2nd: 1/500th, f8, iso 100, 238mm, -0.3 compensation

3rd: 1/320th, f9, iso 100, 133mm, -0.3 compensation

4th: 1/500th, f9, iso 100, 168mm, -0.3 compensation

A6-EBB: 1/500th, f9, iso 100, 119mm, -0.3 compensation

A6-EMI: 1/640th, f8, iso 100, 108mm, -0.3 compensation

Generally as the aircraft is so white, and the background is darker, I usually shoot -0.3 exposure compensation when it's sunny. Sometimes, even -0.7

So a couple of these shots, are more like crops of a wider angle, full view shot, such as the first one. All I need is a good sharp 70-200 2.8 ;) - But from next week they're using the 23L runway, which is 400metres further away. They're using the one only 200metres away at the moment.

Hehe, the widest lens I have is 17mm.

The large aircraft only JUST fit in. I'm hoping the A340-600, and A380-800 can still fit in, although I don't think they'll be using taxiiway Bravo. Too narrow. They'll use runway 23R/O5L, when the 23L/05R becomes operational again next week.

Singapore 747-400 at 17mm:

And a slightly different angle of Air NZ at 17mm:

Even at 300mm you must have been real close to these aircraft, how do u manage that in the age of Bin Laden?

Very nice shots Wazza! I like the full frame one.

Did you shoot jpeg or RAW?

Wazza
9th of May 2005 (Mon), 18:42
JPG Fine.
As I shoot too many shots, and this time, I forgot one CF card, and left it at home!

Also I can't seem to edit that well from RAW. I don't have CS, or that other good RAW program.

Most shots on airliners.net are resized down to 1152x768 pixels, although recommended is 1024... So all shots are 1/3 or less in size. Doesn't matter if there is a slight jpg noise, there shouldn't be too much, as the shots have to be uploaded on high quality, 10-12 in photoshop.

Thanks anyway

And Jonny...
It's New Zealand, and not USA/UK/ and other terrorist regions. The security generally just wave at me, or smile. They know we mean no trouble. Unless you're joeseph with a SAM (100-400L), looking straight down at a 747, but from 3km away!! (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=71148)

All my shots are through the security fence, in a privately owned area, by a local company. They generally don't mind us there, as long as we don't take all the carparking spots!

Nice shots. I'm very familiar with the 777.

I've sat in the cockpit for quite and while and marveled at the controls. (My mom is a flight attendant).

Funny you mentioned that. One of the places i pick up and deliver is a rebuilder of aircraft landing systems, the largest tire I have seen to date wa 53 inches tall, with a load rating of 53,000 lb. the tire and wheel weighed around 425 lbs. They also rebuild brakes, theyre hard to imagine till you see a brake caliper the size of a large pickup tire with 14 pistons!

Wazza, dont know why you are complaining abt the sigma, coz these shots look great to me !
I will probably be arrested if I try shooting near airport in Tokyo ;)

Heh, thanks everyone.

Sigma is great value for money. Just when you've already used a better lens (100-400L), but can't afford it just yet.. It kills! LMAO. I'll have to steal "V6Goose"s. He lives pretty nearby. ;)

The one shot that I'd like to have is the one head on shot, with the pilots in the cockpit with their cool- Ray Ban.

Wazza

Heh, so would I.

I've been to the airport about 10 times in the past 3 months with my 20D, and not once have they used the other runway. They vacate the runway right in front of where I am, IF they use 05 (landing from the West). New Zealand has a very predominant South Westerly wind. 90% of the time it is this. :(

Here's a couple of shots side on again, but showing a bit more detail.
Both Qantas 767's.

http://wazz*****scity.com/20d/vh-ogo.jpg - This one got rejected on airliners.net for "Bad Soft" I had already given it about 4 USM.s LOL

A Boeing 727-200 ADV main tire weighs in at about 480-500 pounds and the brake assy weighs in at around 350 pounds. Very heavy parts. I have changed many of them in my time.

Does anyone know the details on the new A380-800?

Everything is huge on that thing.

That was the one that just flew it first test flight. I saw something about it on the news, but have not heard any other details. As for as biggest tire on an aircraft the B-36 holds the record for that. I'm 5'10" and it is taller than me.

Exciting shots Wazza. So how close were you to the planes?

Wazza
10th of May 2005 (Tue), 13:41
Just read the Airbus A380 has special Michelin tyres, which are 18 kgs lighter than conventional tyres the same size.

This tyre is a 1400/530 R 23 (overall diameter 1400mm. Width 530mm on a 23 inch wheel)

At least I'm bigger than this wheel. I'm 1.85metres tall.

Hey Grim we also had the Emperor visit here in Orlando a few years back and what I found strange is that the pilot did a couple of touch and go before they actually landed. Nice shot.

Some strange stuff happend now as well. When Japan 2 took off, it kinda waved with the wings to us. Kinda "good bye" gesture. Cool.
Anyways, got some pics from the take off as well.
Japan 2 took of later in the evening.
