I just bought two new Canon G9s and they are both dead after I inserted the same memory card into both of them.
Removing the battery and reinserting it doesn't make a difference. Nothing happens at all now when I press the power button.
Is there any way to hardware reset these? Any other advice?

That's one hell of a card.

Never heard of that before. These cameras did fire up before even without a card in them, or with another card in them right? They should at least still power on without the card in. I don't believe a memory card writes anything to the cameras internal software or changes it in any way. Maybe bad DC boards?
THIS (http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/11/simple-fix-for-dead-cameras-that-wont.html) might help.

Thanks for the link. The cameras both came back to life a few hours later. I have no explanation...

Dead batteries maybe? Sometimes, a rechargeable battery will "recover" power after sitting for awhile.

They were brand new and fully charged only an hour before.

A minute piece of packaging stuck to a terminal or finding its way into the battery housing is a definite possibility.
It once happened to me.
