Hello all,

New to DSLR's, picked up the 20D and 28-135. I now need something with more length. I know I should get a 100-400 but that is a little too rich right now. I was looking at the 70-200 f4 but not sure if that is a huge leap in length. Should I get a lower model Canon or Sigma/Tamron? Thanks in advance for the help.

Will mainly shoot outdoors with this lens.

My first recommendations for 'ambitious zoom buyers with non L budgets' are the Sigma 50-500mm, or the Sigma 80-400mm OS (if you want Image Stabilization).

Zooms for 'budget first buyers' Sigma 70-300 APO Super II and Canon USM 100-300.

None of these are indoor usage lens really: decent outdoor light and they will do the business nicely.

You're right ... 200mm is often too short and so is 300mm for wildlife. Lots of posts of this nature, so have a wade through and search for ZOOM :-)

I am a 'budget first buyers', so i second Condyk's recommendations. The Sigma APO and EF100-300 often receive good reviews for their class. If you want to shoot butterflies, dragonflies, birds....etc, 300mm is the minimum IMHO.

... though if the bugs sit still for a few seconds then a 50mm Macro will be good
