my buddy uses his wimberley head and 3 series gitzo tripod with his 500L f4. he'd also like to use the tripod for landscapes with short lenses like the 24-105L while on vacation.

how do you do it?

really right stuff has the RRS MH-01 head. is this the way to go or is there a simpler way?

thanx :D.

The MH-01 will work, but if he is not going to take the 500/4 on vacation, why take the Wimberley? Why not just use a ballhead?

Only other way I can think of is by using a square camera plate w/ dovetails on all four sides...but even then he could only move up/down or side/side.

Have you enlightened him on the benefits of owning something like the GT1541T/Markins Q3T?

indeed...he just bought the 1541 + Q3 upon my recommendation but he doesn't want to carry a second tripod just for the occasional landscape.

we will be coming ashore twice a day via skiff and hiking (short) to view and photograph bears. the really right stuff head could also double as a monopod head so i like that idea but i was wondering if there was another gizmo that others use.

then he might not be able to carry his purse :-):-) FWIW I frequently hike w/ the 500 and tripod/gimbal over the shoulder and the Benro/Q3 strapped to my backpack...hardly notice the small tripod due to the pain inflicted on my shoulder from the 500:-)

he's a tough guy but he is 64 and he refuses to have surgery on his bum shoulder :D.

i figure more hardware would be a better solution than try to get our wives to carry our gear :D.

Then I would contact RRS, as they might have a plate or clamp that would work. The only downside to using the MH-01 would be that when you switch from landscape to portrait orientation, you need to recompose or even move the tripod (similar to flopping the camera on a ballhead, instead of using an L bracket).

i don't think that would be much of an issue or at least not a dealstopper but i think i will give RRS a call on monday :D.

Assuming your friend has a body plate or an L plate, then all he need is a Wimberley M8 perpendicular plate. It attaches to the body or L plate and then to the Wimberley. Have him check the Wimberley site for description and cost.

thanx Jim -- i knew there was something else :D. the RRS option looks like the better option since it allows you to level the camera and shoot in the vertical position without an L bracket.
